It really depends on the setup you go with. The more popular intakes are housed within the engine bay so they will be no more effected by weather than your factory box. The aFe dual cone intake we have in our cars is positioned where the factory box sits on the engine to avoid any issues with hydrolock.

A true CAI, from what I understand, will always give better performance gains. Since it sits near the fog lamp (at least the Stett CAI does) then I'd imagine it would pick up more junk, especially in rain or snow.
I live in SoCal, so I don't have that problem and I'll be purchasing a Stett CAI soon. I've seen many great reviews, whereas I've seen many mixed reviews about a DCI that sits in a baking hot engine bay.

You won't have to clean a non-oiled CAI very often. The AFE CAI sits in the same area as the stock intake. That are is pretty well insulated so your chances of getting rain or snow water up there are slim to none.

Injen has a great reputation for the imports ....... they're fairly new to the BMW scene however.
CAI is going to be your best bet in keeping the hot air out & the cold air in. I personally prefer the stock air box w/ the Macht Schnell drop-in over my aFe DCI these days. |
