Okay,

So I had the Steptronic(with paddle shift) 125i with a similar spec to my 135i this weekend in Durban as a test drive..It's really cool to change gears with a button like an F1 driver but when I got back in my 135i this morning and drove to work on the N12, the roads were quiet at 6:15am and so I dropped down to 4 from 6 and blasted off..When I got to work, I took a look at the car while I let the turbos cool and decided...There's no way I want to part ways with this awesome machine! The manual's more fun and involved...No more paddle shifting for me thanks..

The 135i has the sport auto gearbox which is slightly more responsive than the 125i's box. I'm very happy with it.

It has a wider ratio spread then the manual which is great for economy. In higher gears and low revs there is so little engine braking effect that it becomes a bit annoying in bumper-to-bumper traffic; sport mode fixes that, preventing it from taking off in 2nd and shifting up below 2000rpm. (Ironically, I almost only use "sport" mode in peak traffic.) That being said, this little foible is still far better than driving a manual in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

If I didn't live in the big smoke (Jozi), I would have got the manual. For a relatively powerful car, it's such a light clutch and shifts are really slick. In the good old days I had both a manual and an auto (well, CVT) car; the grass was always greener!

The one thing about the auto though is that I find the paddle-shift to be a gimmick. If you rapidly drop the throttle past about the half-way point, it drops gears almost instantaneously (even pre-empting the full kick-down feature) and you soon get used to controlling gearing with your right foot.

I see the Z4 s-drive35i has the DCT box...pity that isn't on offer in the 135i...
