Went to the track with JB+, no gain?

I took my wifes 09' 4 door auto to the track for the first time. Car had about 750 miles on it at the time. I did about 3 passes bone stock. Grudge racing, so no times. Each pass was right at about 100mph. I then installed the JB+ set at 2 notches above default, not sure what percentage that would be (how much does each notch represent?). I took the car out on the road and did about 6 or 8 wide open runs from about 30-120 to hopefully let it adapt. I then made 4 or 5 more passes. Never topped 100mph. The car felt stronger up to about 70 and then seemed to nose over to 100mph. Air temp was about 90 with a DA over 6k feet. Was this not enough time for the car to adapt? Is it possible that the intercooler was heat soaking from the added boost and heat causing it to pull timing? I scanned the car and have no faults stored. Any ideas? Thanks.

You should just set it to 100% and do the solenoid bypass. Also 6-8 WOT runs is not enough time for it to adapt I did more WOT throttle runs than that every day for about 3 days before it really seemed to have settled in.. The 2nd day was the biggest difference though.

The JB+ is set to increase boost only under conditions where it has been determined to be safe. It may be you're not getting much of a boost increase in those circumstances of 6000' and 90+ temperatures. You can always crank it up more if you need.

Mike
so if its not determined to be safe on his current settings he should just crank it up more

nice.........

Without times this post is useless... Looking at the speedo at the end of your run is hardly an accurate assessment :-\ meh

Mike (or anyone willing to chime in..),
I apologize if this has been answered before. I have an '08 335 with JB+ and solenoid bypass. Can you give me an idea of the type of conditions (temp, humidity, etc) when the JB+ will cut boost. My car feels great sometimes and in other cases, it feels "stock-like" (ie. warm, humid days). Thanx

What were the temps when you did the first pulls? It most likely has to do with the temps being 90+ on this last pull.

Due to heat soak and your stock FMIC your can was running stock boost (safety mode of the JB+) so it wouldn't change your trap.

It is a very subjective thing and the tuning is setup conservatively. At altitudes above 3500' and/or temperatures above 90 degrees boost is taken off the top end primarily because the ECU is already adding extra boost up top. You still get a great torque kick in those conditions, but in a 1/4 mile race from 5000-7000rpm it isn't as aggressive as it would be in lower DA and/or cooler weather.

Actually I've been poking at BMS to release more aggressive JB+ mapping for those that want it. Maybe when 1.4 is finalized they can get to that.

Doesn't the JB+ fool the ECU into thinking its at a higher altitude anyway? If so, when you're 6000' and have a JB+ I would think its having trouble squeezing anymore power out of the engine due to oxygen deficiency.

It works that way in analogy but technically a bit different. Regardless you're right in that at higher altitudes you need to be more careful with top end boost. Especially in the double-bad situation of 6000' and very high temperatures. Would be interesting to see full slips for comparison.

Where are you located, Colorado? If so, we are a BMS dealer and can help you out, just let me know.

I am in northern Nevada. The track is at 4k feet but I've seen DA's as high as 8k here in the summer. I think I'd have to agree the heat was the biggest problem. When I left the track I stabbed it at about 80 and it pulled great. This was without having been WOT up to that point so that would be the difference.
RambleJ: The temp was around 90 for the first run. Forgot to mention, this was a night race, started about 7pm. So the conditions only got better as the night went on, not worse.
I know not having full slips doesn't help, but the MPH should have gone up if I was making more power. Plus, almost all my runs were against my buddies Camaro and the outcome never changed. I'd jump him off the line, and then he'd pull me the rest of the way. We never finished more than a half car apart.

i'm not bashing the JB+, but being at high altitude I would try a different tune of some sort.

So, Mike,
I really would like to get a JB+ but I live at 5000' elevation. I know my turbos are already working "overtime" at this elevation. Would a JB+ not be a good idea? Or, would something like a JB3 or Procede be better and would they actually make a significant difference in power at this altitude?

The JB+ algorithms are optimized for safety at the expense of top end performance in certain circumstances. Just being at 5000' won't impact boost much provided temperatures are reasonable. But the double bad combination of high altitude and hot temps tells the JB+ to reduce top end boost. The car will still feel much faster. The JB3 is a more sophisticated platform with electronic boost control so can do much more power wise up there. My suggestion would be to start with the JB+ and then upgrade to the JB3 if you feel you need more power.
