windshield replacement

I recently had to replace my windshield do to some rock that was flipped up and put a nice crack in it.

Safelite was the company that replaced my glass. It doesnt seem like it is a direct replacement.

for those of you that still have your factory windshield, does it look like this around the rear view?

this new windshield has an untinted area around the rear view. i could have sworn my factory glass did not have this.

thanks

Looks different. Mine doesn't have the untinted area where the rear view mirror/rain sensor meets the windshield.

If you mean the black dot matrix area with no tint in the middle of only that area, then mine looks just like that. I have a 2006 330i with rain-sensing wipers.

Edit: Wait, now I see what you mean. That bowl shaped subtle line that goes from the left of the mirror to the right. No, mine does not have that. Check the lower left corner of the windshield. Make sure that it's the same brand as the other windows and has the same BMW roundel.

whenever it comes into important jobs like this, always depend on the dealership even if you have pay a bit extra. Atleast you are totally covered if anything went wrong at all.

end of the day, i dnt understand why many people replace non OEM windscreen even though i agree the OEM windscreen is weak as hell. The only reason i said i dnt get it is because it really does affect the car's rigidity.

Safelite is a good company and they do good work, but they will give you the lowest price option. I'm guessing the price they quoted was $300-400 right? The glass that you got was not an OEM glass, it was a lower quality aftermarket product. The original OEM glass is closer to $700-800.

I am in the same process of replacing my windshield and was debating whether or not it was worth the price difference, it definitely is. It kinda sucks for you (sorry), but you have helped me make my decision.

Yes, I had to request OEM. It was more expensive than what the insurance would pay for, so I had some out-of-pocket.

I actually have that on my car. The same loop right by the rain sensor, but I have a Euro E90. No changes to my glass, it original from the factory. Perhaps thats one of the differences between US and EU?

Safelite is TOP NOTCH imho. Yes, you knew the price was low when you got the quote. You knew you were not getting OEM windshield from BMW. However, they replacement is likely very well made. It may be different, but well made.

Nothing wrong with safelite. That tint ring just looks odd.

they said it was a direct replacement for the windshield. they back up their work (or so they say). I didnt notice it until the next day.

a service manager said the untinted area was for the sensor but i see no reason to have that much of an untinted area.

it actually in the glass. if you run your finger over it, it is smooth.

ill post an update when they get back to me.

thanks

How do I make sure they get the OEM glass and not some aftermarket brand like safelite uses?

I do know the OEM glass in my '99 Z28 was LOF brand from GM before the windsheild was replaced due to a crack that migrated from the corner
due to chip damage from a rock prob flung up from the road
It was a few inches long then it grew longer than a dollar bill in a few weeks. Now the brand is PPG and they used generic windshield exterior trim and it looked like $hit and didn't look right (stuck out too tall).
Called the insurance and was put on a 3 way conference call with safelite, payment from insurance with-held until it was corrected.

I had to go to a GM dealer and buy the OEM windshield trim and bring it to safelite and they installed it for me...and the windshield had to come out again for the trim installation.

As for my car, I had the rear bumper replaced and told the insurance company it's at the bodyshop (top of the line BMW certified, although the most expensive one in this state) because some b!tch touched my rear bumper with her mother's Hummer H2 towhook.
I told the manager I want OEM parts only and they noted that in the work order and there was no problems.

I even mentioned to my insurance co. that I only accept OEM parts and no aftermarket.

How do I make sure in the future if the windshield has to be replaced, that it's OEM?

I've heard dealers will contract the windshield replacement out to independent shops.

I just got my windshield replaced today-with OEM glass-by Heckman Auto Glass.http://www.heckmanautoglass.com/ here in San Diego.

Total price? $750.00...

I took a ton of pictures during the whole process and will post these in another thread soon.

I need to get the front windshield for my 335i coupe replaced and am scheduled to use safelite this weekend, but after looking at this picture I am hesitent especially because of that blue band on top. I have read a bunch of threads on safelite vs. OEM glass, and I had thought that the only visual difference was the lack of the roundel in the lower driver-side corner of the glass. And I was actually thinking that maybe it is better to use safelite since BMW OEM glass is supposedly softer and more prone to future chips and cracks. Is there any other forum member who can comment on safelite windshield for the e92? Do they all come with that blue band? Thanks.

just make sure you tell safelite you want the oem glass.

I talke dto safeltie and they swapped my glass out for an oem one. They are a great company to work with.

make sure you check out the glass before and after the install. also make sure they put back the rubber that goes along the top of the windshield on so it is discrete. when they replaced my glass , theis new guy installed beter than the first guy so it is not obvious.

good luck

When I first booked my appointment I asked safelite about OEM glass they said I would have to procure it myself and then they would charge $100 to install it. And from what I understand the glass alone from a dealership is like $700 or 800 or something crazy like that. Safelite installed OEM glass for the same price as their in-house glass? Is that only because you complained about the first one?
