What is This World Comming To?

I was on my way to work today when something happened that really made me laugh! I was cruising along the backside of Ft Bragg, which is the mini Autobahn, when I passed a line of 3 cars. The lead car was a late model X6 doing about 55 mph. Well I was more interested in going 80 mph, so I waited for a passing zone and opened it up.

After I passed them I looked in my rear view mirror and saw the X6 on my tail flashing his brights and hazard lights. I was unsure if he was signaling me on a job well done, I had an unnoticed problem, or maybe someone was making a citizens arrest. So I pulled over, and this Captain I recognized got out of the X6, stormed over to my window and PROcede-ed to scold me.

After he berated me for driving 30 mph over the limit, I assured him that I had passed him "safely" and that I didn't mean to hurt his feelings. Then it was like a light went off in his head and he recognized me. I told him I was in his company and then he got all chummy with me slapping me on the back (multiple times).

Now when he see's me in the hall he calls me "Speedy". Damn that's depressing. I was thinking about buying an X6 for the wife as our next vehicle, but if that's the caliber of people driving them around, he changed my mind.

well dont NOT buy a car because of what other drivers do. hell, if we followed that mindset, none of us would be driving BMWs.

+1. So a guy acts like a lunatic and you pull over to chat??? Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Happy to hear it turned out okay, tho.

True, haha. We do have awesome cars and we are obligated to inform/share that with others whatever the circumstances!!! You are a true emissary!

I do the same thing. Flash my fogs over and over just like they are, then floor it away.

HA! A Captain can afford an X6, especially if his wife is working too. Hell, with finance rates and all the money guys are saving while deployed even a Private can afford a 335i

NCSOF18C: I too work at Ft Bragg. I'm not sure whether you are talking about Manchester or Chicken Road but seeing how you are a 18C I'm going to guess it is one of them. You are right, it is like a mini-autobahn, especially on Manchester but a word to the wise. The Post Provost Marshall has put out that both of those roads are his "summer pet-projects" and there are MP's all over the place. You get pulled over doing 80 and you will spend a Saturday morning in drivers' ed, your commander will get a notice and you will probably be arrested for reckless driving. In addition, in the last 6 years I have been on Bragg at least 4 people have died on Manchester in head-on collisions.

I'm not trying to be Mr. Poopy-Pants. I've had my car 145 mph out there but watch out!

+1. I was in the military 25 years ago and wouldn't have dreamed of owning anything close to these cars in price back then.

I'm with the guys above, I had an asshole about 8 inches from me after I made an aggressive lane change on the interstate flipping me off like a child, I dropped it and flew. At least he took it in jest instead of too seriously

On post or off-post? I think I know where you're talking about.

So sad that the military has turned out like it has. It's not the same service now as when I joined.

Sometimes my commute takes me on a fast windy highway in the South San Francisco Bay (Hwy 17) which is two lanes on each side. The other day I was coming home, back to San Jose, and I was coming down the Lexington Grade (which is a rather twisty part) and there were two cars in front of me, one in each lane, going about the speed limit. I was in the fast lane and it was like a road block in front of me. I DID NOT TAILGATE!!!! I stayed about three car lengths back, close enough to let him know I wanted to pass but not close enough to be dangerous or rude. They stayed side by side for about three minutes.

When we got to the bottom, the one in the left lane went a little faster, but did not move to the right. He may have been doing about 60 to 65 in a 55 mile zone. Sure I pulled right and passed him doing like 70+. But then he flashed his brights at me when I got into the fast lane again, like I was doing something wrong.

Here he was, pacing the car in the slow lane, creating a rolling road block. I made it clear that I wanted to go faster, but he did nothing. And he seemed to think that I was doing something wrong to him?

Hell that's a selling point for me.
I recently came into a good trade offer on a MT IS250. A girl I know told me that if I drove a Lexus, or for that matter, any type of luxury car, I would look like a "pretentious jerk" and other girls would not like that. I told her I didn't care, because as far as she's concerned I am a jerk. That's not the reason I ended up keeping my car, but still.

Another girl told me that her sister once dated a guy who drove a BMW and yes, he was a jerk. I think it's hilarious that people automatically assume things about you based on the car you drive.

doc1911: Thanks for the head's up. I was indeed talking about Manchester. That's funny that you mention the provost marshal. I've been skating on thin ice on that road the last month. A few weeks ago I got pulled over doing 79 mph by the police. It just so happened there was an e90 behind me that he pulled over at the same time and accused us of racing and threatened to throw the book at us, just to let us go with a verbal lashing.

BTW 145 mph is the fastest I've been on Manchester too. All I could get to before I ran out of road

You're right, between deployments and bonuses even a private can own a BMW
