Quite a few have reported a similar noise. Time will tell if it gets progressively louder and becomes a problem or not. My friends stock 135 does not make this sound. I wonder if anyone has managed to get their turbos replaced under warranty for the whining sound? I know wastegate rattles are covered by warranty.....just haven't heard of anyone getting turbos replaced for whine. U Might want to look here: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...ht=turbo+whine |

Does it sound kind of like a whistle?

I have this sound when it's cold. I never drive it hard when it's cold. definitely turbo sound. Some of my friend's 335's do it too, none of them have really become any worse since i noticed it a few months ago.

I also have the police siren sound when the engine is cold; although, not nearly as loud as one of the videos I heard. I never romp the car when it's cold and have a little over 15K on the clock. The car still runs great so I'm not too worried about it. Time will tell.

I have the same whine like sound also, but only on cold start up, goes away after the car warms up a little............The dealership double checked all the connections and all is good. Guess I'm one of the few that has this problem.........

How many miles on the car and for how many miles has the JB been on? I have about 15K on mine with absolutely no whine. I do get some lurching when it's cold but that only lasts for the first 1st & 2nd gear shifts and I really go easy on it until it warms up a bit. I think cn555ic has a very valid question - do you get on the throttle often when it's cold?

I think that unless you are experiencing a decrease in performance, blowing oil, or the sound is obviously loud, the only way to check the turbos is to measure shaft play for tolerance to spec. Not an easy task on the N54, so most likely the dealer is not going to do anything about it until something breaks. Like Mike mentioned already, perhaps some amount of turbo whine is considered OK. |

I'm thinking that a little whine is okay, just like a little rattle of the wastegates are okay as well........As long as it doesn't turn heads......LOL.

Mine has progressed from cold engine whine, to also being there when the engine is warm.......but much more muted on a hot engine and you really have to listen for it.....no one seems to notice it unless I point it out to them. My private BMW mechanic heard it and said not to worry about it just yet. The dealer drove it and agreed that it is louder than it should be but needed more time to diagnose it further. Unless they measure the shaft play or visually inspect the compressor blades, it's hard to accept the sound as normal. However, more and more people seem to be posting that they get this noise... |
