How should I go about asking for an oil cooler retrofit from the dealer??
I just recently purchased a 2007 335i production date: 05/07 perfect date to where I do not get the OEM oil cooler and my diff is welded! So I live in Florida and it is very hot outside and I am running my JB+ at 100% and I saw my oil temps get up to 260F after a short period of time. I want to track my car but I am sure that after a few laps the car would go into limp mode. So who do you think I should talk to at the dealership and what should I ask them? I was planning on just telling them the truth that my oil temps are getting up there and if I was to do a track day this car would not last very long so I need that oil cooler that should have came on the car. But any keywords/tips on getting the oil cooler retrofit for free?

i thought all the 6MTs had oil coolers from the beginning.. but if not, just tell them that you are entitled to one that's what i did and had it installed within the week.
dont settle if they say you cant get one btw, just insist on it and call bmwna! GL

look at your oil filter housing on top of the engine, if it has to big hoses coming out of the front and running along the radiator into the passenger fender well then you have one. or check in front of the passenger tire for the grill and cooler |

The dealer can't do it unless they get the OK from BMW NA so complaining to the dealer is not going to work. Last I heard is that BMW NA won't let you get it unless your car has gone into limp mode as a result of over heating. So best advice is go to the track and make it over heat. then go to the dealer to get it documented then you can call BMW NA and complain well actually beg to get the retrofit.
I have a 07 with no oil cooler and normal operating temp is between 240-250 so 260 is nothing. When it get to 300 that is when you should be worried.

Correct. The engine has to throw some codes. Over 300 and the engine goes into limp mode. At least that's what I've read in a search. I was just curious about the off the street quote on the cooler and install at the dealer.$500-$700? |

i know the vk oil cooler kit, non factory equipped is about 5-7hrs to install, and its a bigger cooler then factory. you have to move the intake manifold to take the old oil filter housing off and put a new one in from a car that was equipped for an oil cooler, run the hoses and mount the cooler.

not cheap thats for sure, i think you would only need it in jersey if you are tracking your car or beating the crap out of it. i installed the vk on a guys car a few weeks ago, we was seeing 260-280 alot, now he hasnt seen it over 240 beating it

I went to my local dealership, and they told me getting the upgraded oil cooler retrofit would void my warranty... Needless to say I went directly to BMWNA and they are checking into the situation... So i'm waiting to hear back from them on this, because the stealership is outta their minds...

With the economy tanking, BMW is very reluctant to provide retrofits right now, but getting them to cover half shouldn't be too hard. Don't even bother calling for a full retrofit if you haven't limped. They'll laugh at you for 260. They're VERY stubborn. If you don't have sport package, your chance of them covering a retrofit are probably slightly greater than 0%. A while back, someone had a thread on how to do it yoruself with factory parts. if the car has a 130mph limiter (non sport pack i or sport pack xi without 18" rims) there is no retrofit. you only get the factory oil cooler when the car his equipped with the factory "High speed synchronisation" (aka, the increased speed limiter)
BMW was only retrofitting sport pack ATs that came without the cooler for the original owners. cpo and used buyers were left out in the cold.

I just got off the phone with BMWNA and just confirmed what Orient330i posted last... They won't retrofit my 335xi with the oil cooler, bastards..

If you do a search, you will find your answers...if you have an "i", you need sport pack to get the oil cooler. If you have an "xi" you need sport pack AND 18" wheel option to get oil cooler. The early build (up till like may 07 i think) auto sport packages are really the only ones eligible for the retrofit, as everyone else either got one or wasn't "supposed" to get one. IMO, its BS that not every single 335 gets one, but such is life.
Everyone else is pretty much SOL, unless you can get the car to limp from 300+ degree oil temps and have it recorded and sent to BMWNA. Then you might be able to make your case for it. edit: BTW, I have an early build (10/06) auto, and got the free retrofit from BMWNA. Did everything through email. |
