Topping off Coolant?

I've had my e90 for ~1.5 yrs and have my first scheduled visit coming up in 1000 miles.

I popped the hood when the engine was cold ~7,500 miles and my coolant level was below "min." I topped it off using distilled water to "max."

I'm now at 14,500 miles and my coolant level was also below "min" before I topped it off.

Anyone else have the same issue?

I recall in auto shop class that I took at my local JC that topping off a coolant system is a bad sign...as it would mean that there is a leak somewhere...

Mine needed to be topped off (by the dealer) after 1 year. They said this is normal, and I searched here and found a lot of other people saying the same thing. However I think it's better to have the dealer do it since they have the special BMW coolant you need vs just adding distilled water.
