Why do Ferraris have that distinct sound?

You know what I mean, that "bee on steroids" kind of noise it makes when it's on full-throttle. I've always wondered why I haven't found any other car that seem to have similar tone. And if there is, what's the similarity?

Is it the low displacement spread accross 8 cylinders and above?
Is it the type of exhaust it uses?

I can't quite put my finger on it. Anybody got any clues?

combination of exhaust and intake. Also like you said, their engine configuration. Have you heard WRX/STi sound of a turbo flat-4. Dosent sound like any other 4 banger.

STi's sound sick. I just hate the boy racer looks and the crap interior. I know its not a BMW, but it sucks inside. At least make it like a honda inside.

Hmm, don't know about that necessarily. If that was the case, then a Maserati Coupe GT with close engine specs as the F360 Modena should sound similar. But they don't.

I read somewhere that the engine uses a Flat-Plane Crankshaft, which is responsible for that sound.

when i went to Ferrari last with my dad when he was picking up his 599. They had a conductor(like a symphony) tune the exhaust. So the sound would just be orgasmic

Sounds like a riding lawn mower.... Next time you are on one, engage the deck at low RPM, then crank the throttle up sounds just like a WRX.

Truth.

There are few sweeter sounds to my ear than a Ferrari under acceleration.

Ferrari V8s sound like crap to me. And yes, it's because they have a flat-plane crank, which is basically 2 joined 4-bangers. And that's also how the V8 started life in the late 1800s. Some people think it's more exotic . The more sophisticated cross-plane crank came about in the late 1920s, when technology was more advanced. A flat-plane crank V8 revs quicker, and due to even firing, the exhaust can be very simple. But it also vibrates like crap. And sounds like crap too .

But Ferrari V12s sound great .
