Long cranks on 328's ???

I have an 08 328 with 12,000 miles and for the past week have been having long cranks. It used to start right up (first 11,000 miles) now it is taking 2-3 seconds when I first crank it in the morning.

Anyone else had this issue on a 328?

also thought i would give u another good note, a non-turbo car is always gonna be more mechanically sound than a turbo, i think there is alot of people with 328xi that love there cars but they arent like the 335 owners that think theyre drivin around in ferrari's

328i doesn't use the same high-pressure fuel pump that the 335i use for direct injection.

Normally long cranks are due to fuel pressure bleed-down. The car normally will maintain some pressure in the fuel system while it sits. A car with a leaky fuel injector or a leaky check valve at the fuel pump (the normal, in-tank pump) will have that fuel pressure bleed off, thus requiring a longer crank while the fuel pump builds enough pressure for the car to run.

If you car runs roughly after a long crank, it normally points to a leaky fuel injector. If it runs cleanly, the fuel is probably leaking back to the tank.

I've never driven an E90 with the push button start, but try to turn the car "ON" (not "start", however you do that in this car) for a few seconds, then off. Repeat the cycle four or more times. Everytime the ignition is turned "ON", the fuel pump will run briefly to prime the system. Turning it on/off a number of times will fully build-up fuel pressure, thus allowing an instant start. See if this helps.

Another way to test for residual fuel pressure is to find the "schrader" valve test port on the fuel rail. Press it (only with a cold engine) and see if fuel squirts out. My E36 has a schrader valve, but I think that's rare for a BMW, so you might be out of luck on this little test. I don't know what other BMW engines have this valve.

+1

And just because N52's don't have the HPFP, that doesn't mean their pump can't fail from time to time.

If the primary low pressure fuel pump failed, the car wouldn't even start.
