I never budged. I waited 3 months until I found a stick fully loaded. I didn't even like it being Steptronic...not the same. Never owned an automatic.

Ordered mine in April of '05 and picked it up at the end of July. Worth all the sleepless nights...This forum really helped me get through it though.

you could always look for a used manual gearbox and swap transmissions, but that kills the resale value of the car.

definitely won't hurt to stop by a dealer to see what your options are. GL

Love my step auto. I regretted the last stick I had (G35) which was not smooth at all. I currently have a 6MT Corvette and I'm thinking of getting rid of it and get an auto.

Granted I've never owned a stick BMW so I don't know if that would have changed my mind. From my experience, sticks are fun on sunday morning without traffic. But every time I hit traffic going home from work I hated it. I don't think I will ever get another stick.

Grass is always greener on the other side.

Just enjoy what you have. BMW's auto on the E92 is quite good as compared to previous generation. Just shift the stick yourself when you want to control the engine, and when you get stuck in crawling traffic, then leave it in auto while we MT drivers are lugging along all the while enlargening our left calf muscles.

in CA, you have to pay tax on the full value of the new car, so you're gonna get hosed even if its a 100% even trade (which will never happen anyways).

a used one at a dealer is most likely CPO, so figure another couple grand over market value. dealer needs to make a profit, so your trade in value will be a couple grand below market. realistically, you're looking at maybe another $6-7 grand at least on top of your current loan to trade for a manual.

who knows, maybe the dealer will be willing to do give you a deal since an automatic would be easier for them to sell. but keep in mind, even if its a dead even trade, you'll still be hit with about $3k in taxes.

Well you can try to sell your car and buy the same car (same year) with stickshift. The price differences will not be as steep.

I dont know how what the resale value is for stickshift but for brand new cars, generally manual cars are usually about 1.5k~2k cheaper than automatics.

You would have to pay money to get a car that has inherently lesser value.

On another note, i just want say that the Manual 3 Series that i drove felt notchy. You might want to spend some time with one to see if it would work out for you....

The issue would be the same, no?

He would still have to pay taxes on his new purchase.
