Getting iPod Interface Adaptor Installed Tomorrow: Question

Hey guys, I have read many threads about dealer installed iPod interface adaptor, but am still confused.

1. My car did NOT come with factory iPod Interface Adaptor option. Do they need to install this in the glove compartment or the center console? Does the location matter?

2. What is the difference between iPod Interface Adaptor and iPod USB?

3. Do I need to have the interface installed AND also use the auxillary jack to get sound? Or will the adaptor kit be an "all in one solution" for song display in head unit and sound?

(I know about all of the DIY and shortcuts, but am interested in a seamless solution from the dealer.)

Thanks

1) The cable with the IPOD plug can be run where ever you wish. Mine is run to the center console.

2) The IPOD USB (6FL option) is factory install only right now. There is no US retrofit for it. Lotsa differences but since you can't get it installed and you dont have it, who cares :P

3) No, once you plug in your ipod/iphone you are good to go. One thing. If you have the iphone 3g or one of the newer itouches, the BMW ipod retrofit will not charge your iphone/itouch. What are you connecting?

Thanks for the reply man. If where they install the adaptor is just personal preference. I will probably just go with the center console since it is much closer . I will forget about the USB. And thats good to know that the adaptor is an "all in one solution!" (Dont have to worry about connecting iPOD to the aux jack as well to get sound)

I have an older iPOD. But am thinking about getting an iPhone. Interesting that there will be no charge option for those.

On a side note: The dealer quoted me $1100 to install Bluetooth Hands free! Thats gonna be a big NO GO.

I had bluetooth installed and its amazing and I love it. I spent about 1100 w/ parts and install so thats the right price. As for the iphone not charging, there is a solution. www.cablejive.com has an adaptor that you put on that allows for charging the iphone. As for the older ipod you should be fine with just the stock ipod retrofit. One last thing..I had an extender cable put on mine, so I'm not 100% sure that the stock cable can reach the center console.

So I dropped off my car for service and got a loaner. The Loaner had NAV and Bluetooth. Of course there was no NAV DVD, so the the NAV was not an option. But I paired my Motorola Q to the Bletooth with no problem. Made multiple calls which where crystal clear - no issues, and my phone book even transferred over! So thats a sweet option - but for $1100, gonna have to pass for now.

^ What model iPhone do you have - how does that work with the Bluetooth?
