Calls are handled by Bluetooth.
The iPod connection in the arm rest will allow you to use the iPhone like an iPod. The handling of calls vs playing music is done by the iPhone software. It'll fade out the song you're listening to and play the ringtone instead. You can then answer it using the Bluetooth. To change tracks on your iPhone, you use the iDrive controller and select External Device. The iDrive just acts as a controller. |

Yes, you can. iPhone is not the best phone to be used over BT, though - there are issues like poor sound quality, echo and phonebook transfer problems. Other phone models are known to have scored much better in all respects.

Have to add that you will have wasted $200 if you get an intake as well. You car already has a pretty good one. |

I'm confused as my bluetooth works PERFECTLY with my 1st generation Iphone. I used to have an issue which required me to turn OFF WIFI on my iphone, but that is no longer the case with the last few firmware udpates.

Just to add another perspective. I have an iPhone 3G and it's Bluetooth functionality has been flawless with my 09 335i as well as my previous 07 335i. I would say it works at least as well as my Blackberry Curve did with the 07.
Now on the other hand, the iPod integration is frustrating. It sometimes download song info, sometimes does not. Same deal with charging -- sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But as a phone it's worked fine!

Also, my iPhone has worked perfectly over BT in my 07 335i. Would definitely hold off for a few months though, probably 80% chance that a new model will come out here shortly when they release the new version of the software.

I have an iPhone 3G and an '06 E90, and the bluetooth stuff has worked great, no problems.
The '09 X5 loaner I had last week, on the other hand, wouldn't recognize my phone at all. |

my iphone works perfectly as well, both as a phone and as an ipod. Only problem was getting it to play podcasts. I have to start the podcast, then hook up the phone. Then it works great!

Also, if you have the iPod controller, there's a distinct chance that Apple, in their infinite wisdom, will change the dock spec in the new phone so it won't work perfectly with the car until/unless BMW releases an update... |

I say also wait for the new hardware that will be anounced on June 8th. But if you want to get one cheap u can get a refurbished 8gb for 100 from AT&T.
The iPhone works awsome win my e90 non idrive Bluetooth. I use the Kensington aux kit. |
