o2 sensors and ignition timing/afr

Do our cars adjust ignition timing or afr based on what they sniff out from our o2 sensors?

This would make o2 sims mandatory for anyone that has catless DPs and doesnt want timing pulled.. correct?

I originally thought that o2 sims were merely for those that don't want a CEL on their dash.

They adjust based on the front o2s, not the rear.
