Would you use any 10w-60 other than Castrol? or is it do-able?

As the title. I am just wondering if other full synthetic 10w-60 will work for our engine?

(sorry if this has been discussed previously)

http://www.greddy.com/home/?id=200
Greddy GR-1 10W-60 Full Synthetic Oil

I found this from local and they are selling at a much more reasonable price, so I am considering using this to do oil change myself.

Will this work?

Exactly.

There's an SAE rating of each oil. IF the proposed oil had the same rating and viscosity as BMW's recommended, then it would be safe for use.

As long as it is full synthetic at the correct oil weight. I will use Mobil 1 if they have it.

Why change from the recommended oil - besides, from BMW it is free. Am I missing something? If it aint broke, don't fix it.

Most probably for people who will do their own oil change during in-between free service. Also, after the free 4 years service. There are a lot of similar or maybe even better synthetic oil available. Remember that Porsche recommends Mobil 1.

There's more to it than synthetic and weight. Check the SAE rating. If that matches, then you're ok.

So does Chevy. How's that a valid criteria?

Recommended brands only has to do with $$$. They would recommend any brand if the $ works. MB recommends Mobil also.

Folks, Castrol clearly has a deal with BMW; it doesn't mean it's superior. Manual clearly says 10/40 and 10/50 are suitable replacements, but Castrol 10/60 is recommended. I definitely plan to use M1 15/50 after warranty. It's not listed, but I live in TX, where temperatures rarely dip below freezing, so 15 is perfectly fine. In the north, I'd probably use M1 10/40 and monitor oil consumption, which shouldn't be a problem if car is not driven aggressively all the time.

Since I'll drive my car very lilttle, I'll force dealer to change my oil annually as manual calls for during warranty. If I was doing oil changes in-between (which I'd certainly do if driving 15K/yr), I'd stick with Castrol 10/60. Good day.

I too planned to use Mobil 1 but it does not have 10-60 grade......so will get Castrol for the oil change every 7500 miles...
