fuel pump? service engine soon and shakes crazy!?

Well I was driving with my friend for a good part of the day doing some sundays chors.

Car sat for about 20 min. I go back and drive maybe 5 miles, go to overtake a car with about 50% throttle, in second gear, and the car shakes violently!!

I stop at the light and the car sounds like its about to die, shaking, idle is un steady

I pull over shut the car off, turn it bak on and it runs good.

So I'm like wtf?.. I drive normal and it runs good.
I give it a little more throttle and it starts to shake again like crazy and SERVICE ENGINE SOON light came on.

So what's the deal? HPFP?

It was about 60*F today, and I run map4 on 93 octane. I have 27K miles and I never changed my fuel pump.

What do you guys think..

P.S. Sorry for the messed up paragraphs, I'm on my phone.

Sad to say it does sound like the fuel pump. It's not damaged enough right now so it can run under low stress but it will fail completely very very soon. Do you have a BT scanner or can you get access to one? I never threw any codes but I suggest scanning it to be safe and removing your tune prior to taking it in to the dealership for what you know will be warranty work.

Call BMW Assist and get a tow truck to take your car in. I don't suggest you drive the car, you may go into full limp mode at any time and you'll end up waiting for the truck on the side of the road.

Hope everything turns out well.

Oh crap 5soko....it does sound like the fuel pump if it is shaking - unless you had a limp mode half engine light at the same time when it happened, then that also causes shaking.

I guess you know the drill by now - check the codes first and take it from there.

Try changing spark plugs. Can't hurt with a tune and almost 30k miles.

that sounds like HPFP, but scott is right, swap out your plugs too.

Take off your mods and take it to the dealer. if you have a BT, clear everything then go out and beat on the car and hope it limps again.

This has been going on with my car for months amd each time I talke it in they tell me there are no codes so they dont change the pump. The car shudders so badly the door and seat shake and the car feels like it is about to stall out. No chedk engine loght or anything though.
Wonder if my check engine light is broken.
And why do they base the diagnosis completely on the cars fault codes. If the car is not working properly how can anyone be sure it is going to tell us it is broken, if it is broken? (depending on what is not working properly, it may not know it is broken)

It could be an injector failure. I had this happen. Entering the freeway, 'trying' to merge in so hit the gas and 'oh shit' .... not going anywhere and how did this road get soo bumpy... Oh wait, thats the car shaking.

Had codes read and had a misfire and injector shutdown code. Dealership came back saying they had to replace an injector and car runs good again. (knock on wood)

Hey guys, thanks for the support.

Well i let my car sit since i posted this , went out now to try and start it to put it in the garage for the night, took about a good 15 second of cranking !!! hahaha.

Anyways, once it started i got the half engine light come on(engine malfunction, reduced power). So from what i have heard and the feedback here sounds like fuel pump.

Always thought i was a lucky one with a good fuel pump but i guess it has to happen.

Thanks again and i will keep everyone posted.

From my experience this is a combination of HPFP, injectors and spark plugs. If one or more injectors are bad, I strongly encourage you to insist that all 6 be replaced at the same time. Also make sure the plugs are changed while the tech is in there...

Hey guys, thanks a lot for all the help and suggestions!

Got a call from my SA today and my car has been victim of a HPFP failure, hopefully that is all it is. I will have my car back this week and report back.

Also have my JB3 with 1.3 waiting at home full review coming soon

I found out that my car needed mew ionjectors. It never wentinto limp mide but it threw a code last visit. This time they replaced all 6 injectors. The drive home went olk but didnt get to test it due to bad weather.
This morning I went out to start it and got my first limp mode light. So I guess it may be somethin else as well.

I have the same symptoms of the OP, but only when my tune is installed....The tune is out, so hopefully it will throw codes again so I can bring it in to the dealer.

It is not necessarily your HPFP! My car used to start shaking at times and go into limp modes (read the error codes - misfires in cylinders). Changed the spark plugs and everything's fine now.

I started having same kind of problems yesterday and today. Both times it was in the morning when I was starting the engine for the first time for that day. The car is shaking and running badly for about 5 mins but after that there are no problems. Also the "service engine soon" light came on and it has not gone away though the car is running ok again.

Could it be the spark plugs? I shipped my car from California to Finland and it has been working really well till this moment. The weather has been really damp during the last couple of days and this morning and yesterday morning the temperatures were below 32F (0C*).

Bump.

The car has still been doing that. I need to drive it for about 10 or so before it stops shaking and starts running properly.

Thanks

How many miles are on the car? Stock or tuned? I've heard recommendations of around 20K mile intervals on plugs for tuned cars. 30-40K for stock.
