Question of the Day
What's The Best Turbocharged Engine?

There's nothing like the force of forced-induction and there's no wine sweeter than turbo whine. What's the best turbocharged engine?

For turbine lovers it hardly gets better than BMW's N54 twin-turbo 3.0-liter straight-six found in just about every Bavarian product you can imagine. It was the International Engine of the Year for 2007 and 2008 and for good reason. The use of two smaller turbos reduces typical lag while still delivering power when you ask for it. Here's what Siler had to say about it in his review of the BMW Z4:

I'd actually pick the new Z4's turbocharged engine over the Z4 M's naturally aspirated engine. The turbo motor makes peak torque at just 3,200 RPM; the M's peaked at 4,900. That means that any gear, any speed, the new Z4 has huge amounts of shove, culminating in a still impressive top end rush. You can run a gear higher in corners, achieving the same acceleration out of them or pass cars without downshifting. It sounds just like an inline-six BMW should, too.

It's an elegant turbine that turns our gears.

I got a kick out of it. N54 FTW

how about Nissan's TT V6? they have always had monster turbo engines in the GT-Rs and are bullet proof in built quality.

The previous TT beasts were I6 engines (RB's) only the new GT-R is a V6... we have yet to see how much power and for HOW LONG they will able to run that power. Granted the new engine is much bigger in terms of Liters so that helps (displacement) but I don't know what levels of boost they are gonna run on it.

this article fails to mention the side order of HPFP failures that come with pretty much every N54 equipped car.

I know a shop the tunes GT-R's, almost exclusively. They can get those things up to 600hp with ease. It's a lot easier to tune. Nissan isn't not interested in cock blocking you like BMW is.
