Slight turbo whine + wastegates = new turbos

Hi all,

I am having my turbos changed. I went to the dealership on Monday and left the car there for the oil service, mentioning them that I heard those 2 strange noises, a slight turbo whine when cold, from 1500rpms onwards, and the rattling wastegates.

They have phoned me today because they were chaging both turbos. I did not have warranty anymore, in Europe its only a 2-year warranty. However I am not paying anything, they are doing it as a commercial gesture

it might be cheaper for me to ship the car to the states than to pay for it, if something while i'm in england. then again, i would have to pay sales tax as well..

How old is your car? You run some tune? What are these "rattling wastgates" sounds?

From the looks of it he's running a proceede. Is the wastegate rattle (and knackered turbos) come from the tune or is it just bad engineering of the wastegates by BMW?

I really donīt think they would change his turbos for free if he had the tune and car out of warranty.. If so the you have quite great dealers in spain..

I have a procede, I removed it to go to the dealer and cleared the codes. I always drive in valet mode (stock). I may have used the performance maps twice.

I have had the rattling wastegates since I got the car in september 2006, so I think it may be an "old turbo" problem. The old turbos where discatalogued, the news ones I am having installed have new part numbers so I think they might have been revised.
