Changing Injectors Yourself? New plugs Shiv found?
Just wondering if anyone has changed the injectors themselves? I've been getting missfire's on 1 & 6 and the dealer won't touch it because I've got downpipes (!)
I was planning on changing the plugs at the same time, but since I'm guessing it's the injectors that's the priority to change. I know Shiv had hinted he'd found some new plugs, but after looking back 14 pages I couldn't find the thread. Anyone know what the details on the new plugs were? |

dealer changed mine and new plugs because i had misfires on 1&3 but i don't have DPs best thing would be to remove your DPs, i think so.

HotRod: I've been reading some more threads on this. Am I wrong to suspect the injectors first? Seems like several (Shiv was one) have pointed to new plugs as the issue rather than the injectors. I know I've read of people having fouled injectors replaced, but plugs is certainly an easier and cheaper first step. What have you seen?
Alpine: Maybe, but that's not a small job, and then putting them back after the fix. |

Going back through the cobwebs of my minds I seem to remember that Shiv tried a particular plug that didn't work out.

Thanks guys,
OK, so best to start with the plugs. Btw, do you know of anyone who has taken out the injectors, or are they a special fitting to remove? I'm just guessing here that they're the unfinished metal units with the tubing, above the plugs in the pic, and look easy to access (as seen in this pic from e.n335's spark plug change DIY), but I haven't had the engine cover off yet. If I'm correct that those are the injectors, are they easy to remove/replace if the plugs don't fix it? |

The shop cost on the injectors is about $450 each. I don't know about special tools but I do know that the new injectors have to be coded to the car.
In my case, the car had a misfire on 2 and 5. Those 2 injectors were replaced. Less than a week later the car was back in the shop with a bad misfire. This time it was on 1 and 5 (yup...the cylinder with the new injector). My tech convinced BMW to change all 6 plugs and all 4 remaining injectors. Now it is smooth again. All that to say I think the plugs may be the bigger issue. I saw plugs out of another 335i that had been misfiring. The prongs were bent WAY out of shape. If I was you I would start by changing those first since the plugs are only about $15 each.

If its not the plugs then its the coil packs...your having an ignition problem not an injector problem. The factory spec on the coil packs is pretty loose and we have found them to vary greatly in quality...once you start to mod then there is no guaruntee that you will not have misfires because you might have the coils that made it through on the low end of the QC...looks like you might have two!

Injector = $260 part number 13537585261
Plugs = $140 with N54 socket Ignition Coil = $51 Get them from the site sponsor Tischer BMW - http://www.getbmwparts.com I would start with plugs only and see what that does. |

I'm curious.. aftermarket downpipes aren't exactly the easiest thing to spot. Did you actually tell them you had the dp's or did a tech spot them after diagnosing your car?

I had the misfires in 3,4,5 and 6.
BMW replaced my ignition coils and all plugs... problem solved! Especially with a tune plugs and coils gets quicker to the end of their life...

not true, it could be injectors. to the op, just change your plugs first. if the problem persists start thinking about injectors/coils

Thanks guys.
No, they looked for the DP's. I had left the codes in so it showed the missfires, but there was also a Cat code (UR catted DP's-usually with the O2 sim on V3, but took it out before the visit), which made him look at the exhaust. I'll try the plugs, then coils, then injectors. Really, with all of the above, you may be right, might be cheaper to take the DP's out and have them fix it. But as we heard above, fixing it might take a few weeks and multiple trips. Anyway, thanks for all the help. Especially knowing the injectors have to be coded, not a DIY job. I can see why an old F1 mechanic I used to know (for Ferrari back in the 50's) always said his pick for the perfect car was a VW Beetle and a tool box, cause there's nothing he couldn't fix on the side of the road! lol |
