Thumbs up JB3 v1.3 BETA_8D_REV3 Review

Since I find this forum widely educational, I wanted to contribute as well by writing a synopsis of my newly acquired JB3 PnP Beta 8D_ rev3: I'm sure it will be helpful to someone.

1.Ordering
I started my research by reading numerous threads on E90 and N54tech forums to get the basic knowledge and understanding of what JB products are all about. I'm yet to find or read about anyone using a JBx product who has been disappointed in any sense; naturally I then felt comfortable enough to contact Terry via email with some questions about his tunes and mods in general. His email responses were almost IM like, with at most a few hours of delay. Subsequently that made me very confident to pull the trigger..
2.Shipping
Approximately two weeks ago, I received my JB3 PnP tune within 5 days of the actual PO (at order time they were temporarily out of units); Terry even refunded me some money since he combined some mods into one shipping unit – thanks Terry!!! So being eager to see what it does to my car (an '08 E92 with 6 speed and sport), I proceeded to install the JB3 the next day – a Sunday. Now, let it be told that I don't possess any experience with modding or even working on cars in general (or BMWs especially), but I found the JB3 PnP installation relatively easy once I got over the initial learning curve. Naturally I encountered only a few small hiccups as I initially plugged in one of the connectors 180 degrees off and the car wouldn't start. I emailed Terry for support: he replied almost immediately (despite being church Sunday, picnic family time, etc). Together we got it going in no time!!!
3.Impressions- Initial Drive
I finally got the car to start and, just like the manual said, I saw the Service Engine Soon (SES) light on the dashboard. I ignored the light, let the JB3 in its default map of 3, and took my car for a normal drive around the block. Unfortunately, it seemed that a lot of cops were out that Sunday afternoon, so I couldn't really push it like I wanted. At this point, I wasn't blown away...but nevertheless, the car felt stronger, I felt a difference.
4.Impressions - After the ECU Adapted
Approximately 3 days after install, the SES light finally went away. For the 1st week, I kept driving in map 3 and while I felt a stronger pull, I wasn't blown out of my seat like some JB3 users initially reported. It could be that I didn't drive the car every day, but at some point I even doubted my installation and how effective the JB3 was. So I used the gas pedal technique to deactivate/bypass the JB3: I immediately felt the difference, my car now felt lazy and sluggish, YIKES!! So I promptly changed and left the JB3 in map 5 mode and: WOW, MY CAR FEELS, PULLS, SOUNDS AND PERFORMES LIKE IT'S A HUNGRY GARGOYLE BEAST THAT WAS LET OUT IF ITS CAGE!!!

I unequivocally believe that this is the very best mod for our 335i, it's the one that gives you the most performance improvement for the money! The power delivery is smooth, delivered when I want it without any lags or delays; moreover, if I just drive normally, say shifting gears around 4k, it's like the JB3 it's not even there...the car behaves like a stock 335i! But when I punch the gas pedal, that WOW effect just happens: the adrenaline and blood rushing through my veins every time I push it the the max is one of the best experiences ever. I'm currently awaiting my AluFelgens 19” with Falken FK452 to arrive to swap out the infamous RFT and heavy OEM 189 rims, and soon afterwards I'll make it to the track and see what the car can really do! I'm hoping for low 12s if not high 11s for ¼ mile run! As a side note, I should also mention that the only other mod that I have is an aFE stage 3 dual cone intake, and while I can't say if it adds horsepower or not, I can definitely hear the turbos and the engine growl more prominently.

For those of you who are still on the fence about upgrading your 335i's performance, I highly recommend this JB3 PnP product, you'll not regret it! So, thanks BMS, thanks Terry for such a great product and superior customer service, I couldn't be happier with my purchase! Keep up the excellent work, you deserve all the accolades people say!

Why would you get SES after the install?

Technically speaking, I don't have the answer, but I suspect that since you're plugging right into it, the ECU needs time to re-adjust with the new boost settings. But according to the installation manual and what Terry told me, the SES light is to be expected.

Bimmerlex, I see from your signature that you also have the JB3, did you not see the SES light after installation?

No, I have never had SES with JB3, even right after the install. I didn't read the manual from Terry, but I 've never heard of SES being normal for JB3 after the install, that's why I was kind of surprised when you mentioned it.

you should not have an SES - if you do, get the codes cleared. Always d/c the battery installing/uninstalling or make sure the ECU is in sleep mode.

get the bavarian techincs tool from terry at burger motorsports.
not that expensive and besides clearing all faults, you can log anything you want on it !!

then get the bms tuning boost gauge and map switch on the fly, or make your own custom map

cheers

You're correct Bimmerlex, having an SES light is not normal if you had a perfect install, but as I initially mentioned, I didn't have a flawless install :-( However, like everyone here says, I'm saving up for a BT scanner to zap those codes away before the stealership finds out! And while I'm at, I should get a chip burner too for new revisions....I hear that the 1.4 should be months away!

Thanks for your comments guys: love my JB3!!! Don't you just love it when you spent your money wisely???

Probably you're right, 11's with just 93 octane seems tight...but I will sure have fun trying!!

Maybe I'll settle for the 11's for my VROD though!

macbook running windows xp/vista in either VMware Fusion or Parallels.

Nothing is ever zero percent chance, but it greatly reduces the chances if you know what you have before taking it in.

I run the BT tool on my macbook using parallels.

With the BT tool all warranty codes can be deleted. Its a great tool to have beyond the warranty code clearing. With the logging function it can really show you a lot of info about the car and how it runs.

On the DME menu, isn't there a way for the BT to clear selected codes rather than just wiping them all out? I mean, sometimes you might want the fuel pump codes to remain in the DME, but might opt to erase boost codes, etc.
