Mods for Dummies (well, at least this dummy...)
Hey all,
I'm a complete NOOB when it comes to after-market mods, so please bear with me as I ask some simple questions, and hopefully some of you more experienced tuners can help me out! 1. Authentic accessories vs. replicas - I'm assuming that when I see items on eBay that say "OEM style" or "AC style" that those are replicas? What level of quality difference can one usually expect between replicas and the originals? Am I better off just shelling out for original accessories? Other than eBay, where is a good place to shop online for parts and accessories?(specifically, I'm looking at an OEM trunk spoiler and an ACS rear roof spoiler, both preferably painted TiAg) 2. Dealer mark-up - It seems that whenever I inquire about accessories through my dealership's parts guy that the prices are way more expensive than what I can get online. What kind of mark-up are they using? Is there room to negotiate if I want to order a few different items? Should I not go through the dealership and order my own parts? 3. Installation - I'm not particularly handy when it comes to mechanical things, so I'm probably better off paying someone to install mods for me. Is dealership labour over-priced, i.e., can I get a better deal at another shop? If so, should I worry about workmanship at a no-name garage vs. the dealership? 4. Anyone have any good pics of the "sports rear silencer" accessory (exhaust tip)? I'm trying to decide if I like the look or not. Thanks all, much appreciated!

1) Yes, Depends on materials, No, FS and GB section
2) Don't know (but they are considered "stealership" for a reason), Maybe, Yes (try realoem.com or ebay) 3) Yes (refer to question #2), No (just do research on said shop) 4) Are you talking about the chrome 330i tips? |

I'd only goto the stealership for your service intervals or for something that could affect warranty coverage. Other than that, buy online, find a local shop through word of mouth.
Especially since you are looking to install accessories and not maintenence, it shouldnt really matter where you go.

that being said... i believe the issue with the viniati front bumper cover things was that they looked too much like oem front bumper thingies... not too original. And I too must admit that viniati is not to my taste.... each to his/her/its own...sorry I meant VINIATI.

Hawkshaw: all the parts on my car were bought from dealership. For me I take the parts and go to my local bodyshop for installation. You can also ask your dealership which bodyshop they use.
also, BMWCCA membership gives you 10% discount on parts in some dealerships. -hkj |
