Good news for 335s with AUTO Tranny (LSD info inside!!)

Hey everyone,
I recently sold a couple of my mods to save up for my wedding and honeymoon, but lol that doesn't seem to be happening after I found out what I'm about to tell you guys!
Out of curiosity, I was inquiring about the prices for a Quaife LSD for the 335i and found out from Harold @ HP Autoworks that any Manual Transmission 335 with a production date before Feb/2007 had a bolted diff, but after Feb/2007 production dates they had a welded diff. However for Automatic transmission 335s, cars with production dates between Feb/2007 - Jul/2007 are the only ones that have a welded diff (there were some exceptions though), the rest all had a bolted diff! So I assumed that I had a welded diff since my car is a April 2007 build with an AT tranny and given my history of not being a very lucky person with those sort of things to be an exception and have a bolted diff.

The price for just the Quaife differential (to be installed on a car with a bolted diff) is $1450 and the price for a complete final drive unit (to be installed on a car with a welded diff) is $3750

So the only way to be definitely sure what diff I had, I needed to get the part numbers on the final drive, and since I'm on the east coast and HP Autoworks are on the opposite side of the country, Harold recommended I go to one of the best shops in the nation that specializes in BMW Differentials, Diffsonline. Their website is www.diffsonline.com and the guy who works their is called Dan. They're located in Winchester, MA about 45-60mins from Boston. And after reading about them, apparently they do one of the best jobs with differentials on BMWs.

So I called Dan and he confirmed that he is 100% sure that ALL BMW 335is with an AUTO transmission have a BOLTED Diff, and that its only the manual transmission 335is that some had a welded diff. And we confirmed that by actually getting the part numbers from my car's final drive and I do have a bolted diff!! He said that he have sold more than 60 Quaife differentials for the Auto 335i and they all had a bolted diff, some of them to local people, some to people from NH and even some shipped internationally.

So anyone with an Auto 335i thinking of getting an LSD and worried that you have a welded diff, then no worries anymore!!
The diff goes for $1450 and its about 7hrs of labor @ $95/hr and then with all the seals and oil and that stuff your looking at $2200. It might seem expensive but people are spending $1500 on an exhaust or even more than $2000 for those who got the Eisenhaus/Super Sprint which barely give you 5rwhp and a louder sound. However and LSD will completely transform how your car drives, handles, and performs.

I have an appointment set up for the 20th of May and I'll be going for some twisty roads right after the install to do some testing and will come back to report to you guys on how the car now feels. I cant wait

i'm honestly not sure, good question though. I'll ask Dan when I see him. BTW, it doesnt hurt to give him a call, you might have a bolted diff just give him your VIN# and he'll tell you.

6MT. pretty sure they are all welded. 06/2008 or 07/2008 build. I think in their extreme efforts to "keep the M3 on top" they figured people buying manual trannies would be more likely to upgrade...

I think you misunderstood Harold ... he posted almost a year ago that late model autos (after 07/07) were bolted. See link below. Purchased my LSD from Harold, and my build is 09/2007.

Yeah I'm aware of that, I didnt miss understand him, but I guess my mistake was not mentioning that its from 02/2007-07/2007 that he said they were welded. But still apparently thats not true, or atleast thats what Dan (who also works with harold) found out because my car is an 04/2007 build and my diff is apparently bolted. BTW I'm not bashing Harold or HP Autoworks, you learn something everyday and now it appears that all Auto tranny 335s have a bolted diff and only Manual tranny 335s with production dates before March 2007 had a bolted diff.

actually for the 335 i think we have an advantage in most of the things over the MT guys, no need for the cdv mod, no need for short shifter kit, easier to launch with tuned 335 producing 370rwtq+, and now the LSD option

ummm thanks for letting me know, Harold @ Hp autoworks told me that its a 7-8hr job, so did Dan @ Diffsonline, and so did the guys at Dent Sport Garage.

You sure you didnt do a pumpkin swap?? because when i asked them how long it would take to swap the final drive (pumpkin) they said 2hrs. But I'll look into it

Yes I'm sure! My guy used air-tools and his opion was that the swap could be done even faster if you "work harder"... he dropped the exhaust down ( about 10 bolts, 5 min ) disconnect the driveshafts ( if I remember correctly 8 bolts/side 10 min) take some sort of a lift or a jack under the diffhousing and unbolt it ( again if I remember correctly 4 bigger bolts, all easy to reach even with air-tools, 15min) now u have the diffhousing resting on your lift, just unbolt the cover carefully and let the oil run out ( 10 min ) pull the old seals out ( 5 min ) next u need to unlock the locating rings, one on each side, they are quite "strong" so u need bigger pliers ( 10 min ) u are about ready to pull out your old open-diff...once done just swap the crown-wheel to your Quaife-unit ( 10 min ) and do everything in reverse order and you are done!!!

So 3hrs should be totally enough!!! The procedure above is just to give an idea what u need to do...but if others say it takes 7 hrs guess it takes 7hrs then

I had a LSD installed in April and it took 2½ hours at Kevin Birds Garage outside of London. They initially said it would take about four hours but that included the retrofit on the bench. They had the pumpkin waiting before I got there.

I have seen alot of mechanics work who charge by the hour. They tend to spend alot of time thinking about what to do and analyzing the best way to do it. Couple smoke breaks, maybe a phone call or 2, and some coffee/coke. They usually do a good job and are very thorough, not knocking them. Just saying they don't get in a hurry and break much of a sweat

Go watch a mechanic do a job (like at a dealership) where it is a set amount of hours. They will do "2 hour" jobs in like 30 minutes.
