Is this possible

On my way home from a weekend in Cambridge I programmed the shat nav to take me home avoiding motorways, this it did and surprisingly well.

It took me on some brilliant A roads and even some really good country roads, while out there a 10 – 12 year old (own plate) 996 was out having some fun and wanted to play a little (with me).

I would like to make clear at this point (before any tree hugging left wingers start telling me off for dangerous driving) that I had my 4 year old in the back along with my wife in the front, so I was not driving unsafe, but purely enjoying good roads in a good car.

Anyway, back to my point. The Porka was up my arse (I think I could have phrased that better) and was pushing me to the legal limit – maybe a fraction over. We also went around several roundabouts, each time the 996 got in a different lane, gunned it but could not keep up with me. He tried this on every roundabout and at every set of lights and he could not keep up with me.

My 335i (e90) is stock and is only just broke in and as mentioned the porka looked at least 10 years old. Question, could my car really have the legs on the 996 or was the driver just toying with me. Either way it was the first time I have really opened the taps for a sustained period in my car, and what a seriously good car it is.

The 335i is a quick car, and especially in real-world driving. It's very easy to drive the BM quickly and I'm not surprised that the Porka couldn't get past. It would have been even more surprising (for the Porka driver) if your car had 335D on the back...!!

Don't suppose there's much in it with a C4S but a 996 turbo would have gone past you.

Depends which model it is and if you're sure it was that old a 996 then obviously since that time alot of engine/chassis tweaks have been made due to advances in technology 'und so weiter', the same goes for BMW. Then of course there's the 'knob head' factor of the Porsche driver to consider lol. A non 'S' model is certainly going to struggle to keep up with you if you floor yours in a straight line.

I'm still waiting to 'come across' the bloke in the Aston Vantage around my way because this time he won't be passing me on the straight as he did when I had the Cayman.......mind you he did nearly lose it on a roundabout trying to keep up.

When you consider the early 996 Carrera 3.4 engine produced then (maybe not now) 300 bhp and 350 Nm torque compared to your 335i at 306 bhp and 400 Nm torque you can see there isn't a lot in it between you and the Porsche and it is unlikely to find it easy to pass. Remember torque is what accelerates you and bhp just keeps you there. I bet the Porsche driver is more pi**ed than you are surprised

Also maybe the Porsche driver needs a track day at Silverstone ........anyone interested in cars should know what the 335i has under it's belt ffs, even accepting it's always harder being the one doing 'the chasing'.

An old 996 would be easy prey for a 335i these days. Glad you had some safe fun.

There are some great roads up here.

Copied from Evo
Make Engine Bhp/Rpm Weight Bhp/Ton 0-60 Max Mpg
BMW 335d 6/2993 282/4400 1655kg 173 6 155 38

Porsche 911 Carrera (996) 6/3596 316/6800 1345kg 239 5.1 177 25.5

The 996 should be quicker by a bit if not because it is lighter.

Mate my standard 335d lived with 996's.. and it went somewhat quicker to 60 than 6.1.

Id love to muller one at the pod now.

Not many stock 335is touch 5.2 either.. More like 5.5-5.7

5.2 was a tasty press car...

The Porker SHOULD be quicker to be fair, but there are sooooo many out there that aren't driven well and are more than likely garaged up toys that are brought out once in a blue moon (probably on 2 month old 95 ron fuel).
But when up against the clock with a decent driver you can't knock their stats and I hate to say it Carl, but I very much doubt you would be mothering one at Pod if you get a well driven decent example lined up next to you on the start line. Was there the other month and there was chap there who I was chatting to in a Carrera S and he was running 12.8s... They have awesome traction off the line with the rear engine set up and also have the power once rolling too, so you will certainly need your 17's and 888's mate to keep up... lol
Plenty out there with 60 year old toffs though that wouldn't know what a full throttle gear change was if you explained it to them.. lol So don't be suprised if you do leave/keep up with one (especially if it has the crappy tiptronic box too)..

If you go against one with the PDK transmission they are even quicker..

The DXB has never been standard. It was a legend the day it left the factory
