Have you managed it? There's another one (maybe two) at the back, also. The cover does come off,but it's a pain. Getting it back on is a major pain, also.

If it is anything like the 330d then I would advise getting either your dealer or an independent to do it. If you break the filter housing its at least 40 quid for each part, then the engine cover is around 100 quid, and its easily done.

I bought a K&N a few months ago and tried to change mine.
Wish I hadn't bothered. Had to take micor filter housing, engine cover and filter side / top off. Managed to see the BMW filter but couldn't prize it out for love nor money. I guess the only way to remove filter without snapping something is to remove the diagonal engine brace for ease of access. I didn't have the required star socket so gave up. I intended to have another bash when I had a couple of hours to spare but read on E90 that some guys didn't rate the K&N over the OEM Filter too much and one or two had experienced limp mode due tot the oil affecting the MAF. |

The filter I have (ITG - still on oiled foam filter) makes a difference, particularly at higher revs. It's not a "wow" difference, though. The main difference is it allows me to run a higher flow program.
I found a normal socket that fits the star bolt on the brace, then you can swivel it out of the way at bit. It would be better to take it off, but I've never figured out it unbolts from the bulkhead...
