Strange noise while turning
Just got my M back yesterday from the body shop. They replaced front right wheel, tire, brake caliper, disc, steering knuckle, lower control arm, front strut assembly, spring, stabilizer, and steering gear assembly. Basically the most of the front suspension. It was balance/aligned.
This morning I started the car and reversing out of my driveway. I noticed this weird rubbing/humming noise (sounds like its coming from the engine or front of the car) while i was reversing and moving the steering wheel. The same noise again when I was in first turning out to the main road. It was gone after that. I started the car again for a trip to the bank. Same noise came back, reverse and first. On one of the turn I took a hard right turn @ 40mph and I heard the noise again. I couldn't replicate this to the body shop. Does anyone know what this maybe? I did some research online and it could be anything from the LSD, drivetrain, pulley, or fender rubbing. One of the tech told me its because one of front tire is brand new and it needs time to wear down. I don't believe that. Also, my TPMS light keeps coming on after 5 minutes. They tried resetting it and it does go off. But after 5-10 minutes of driving it comes back on. Thanks, Kream |

does it only make the noise when the car is cold? when my car is cold and while i make turns my differential is making a screeching/clanking noise. my mom had the same issue in her corvette, only much worse, and louder.

An update to this "noise" I'm having. It does go away after the engine warms up. But every time I take a hard right turn I'm getting a different noise (sounds it like its coming from the suspension). This is possibly due to all the parts I had replaced in my accident. I'm going to have BMW check on this. Its strange that it only does it on one side and not the other.

Turns out it was steering fluid. They flushed it, primed, and now its all good. The mechanic first thought it was the fender rubbing on the wheel.

Took the car in for scheduled maintenance today and also had them take a look at the noise. Just got a call from my sa and he said that [in my case] it was the rear differential. He said there's a service bulletin for it and they're taking care of it. I'll see if I can find out what that bulletin is and post it.

FYI there is a tech service bulletin on Diff noise while turning
It's typically solved with a change of fluid plus some friction modifier additives.
This specifically addresses diff noise in slow-speed turns. P/N 832 222 82 583 SAF-XJ + FM booster Plenty to read here: http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=86605 NOTE this change may not necessarily cure all cases of differential noise/grinding, YMMV. regards rob |

Check the tire pressure. If you are close to the low side on pressure the light will sometimes come on once the tires warm up. With 5-10 minutes of driving it sounds like this is what is going on with your cars TPMS.
