Oil change

Hope everyone had a great weekend. I had to add some oil on my road trip due to the low oil warning. Since it wasn't the same OEM 10W60, I thought I'll change my oil to make myself feel better.

I was quoted $414+tax for an oil change from the dealership (T&C). Even though I expected a high quote. That was still shocking! Anyone know of a place in the GTA they'd recommend? The other thing I was thinking of is brake fluid change for the track if I do go.

Thanks.

you dont need to do a whole oil change just because you didnt top it up with 10w60 oil...

in any case, find your local bmw shop and they should be able to give you a much better quote. over here in mtl, we have bimmershop that does an oil change for bout half the price of the dealer... the oil and parts along would cost about $160cdn i think and add labor to that. it should end up around $220 or so if they charge 1 hr labor...

the alternative is to order the oil yourself and do the change on your own. some automotive shops carry 10w60 oil, just have to call around. as for the oil filter, you'd still have to get that from the dealer. i can give you the part no. if you want. just pm me.

Ya, I just called around, and T&C was definitely way over priced. Interesting how a simple oil change varies so much from dealer to dealer.

$275 from Autohaus
$280 from Maranello
$359 from Parkview

So the story was I couldn't find 10W60 and added 10W40 (alternate one listed in the manual). So I thought it may be better to change it all... or am I just paranoid? Funny thing was I was just thinking of keeping a bottle of oil in the trunk... but thought... what are the odds. : )

I also saw Tischer has the M3 oil change kit w filter for $115 US including shipping.

I honestly do not think you need to change the oil because you topped it off with an alternate grade listed in the manual. Do not worry and save your money would be my advice. BMW says the engine can run no problem with 10W40 and you prob have something like a 10W57 in there right now

so that means we dont really need to stick with 10w60 all the time?
I find the 10w60 sold from dealership is way over priced in Canada. Some USA consumer find them from their BMW dealership for $10/L and I had to pay almost $20/L after tax.

yea oil is expensive here in mtl as well... the dealers would rip you off as soon as they get a chance. i always buy my oil from local suppliers. usually ends up costing bout $15cdn/L after tax compared too $21/L after tax that my dealer charges.

While Motul 300v is a great oil,I am not sure that I would use anything but the BMW 10-60.If you use a non-recommended Oil BMW could bounce your warranty on an engine problem if they found it is not the recommended oil. They have been known to test oil samples in engine failure related cases.

I paid $280 tax @Parkview last fall. The initial quote was about $360 which included the pollen filter, but that was corrected quickly.

Yah..not sure I would intentionally do an oil change with anything other then Castrol 10W60, but in UNivek's case, I dont think a top off of a BMW approved alternative oil is anything to worry about.

Not a stupid question at all.
Yes, BMW scheduled intervals are no charge. But lots of people on the board are not comfortable with the 20,000+km between the break in service and the next scheduled oil change, so they would rather pay for another one in between for piece of mind. If I owned mine and planned to keep it for high KM's I might do the same, but because I lease, I'm comfortable with the guidelines BMW set.

I'm not sure why a manufacturer like BMW would recommend something that would harm your car? I'll just stick to what the engineers at BMW M recommend.

yeah no kidding, at $300 to $400 a pop that's going to be pretty costly unless you do those in between oil changes yourself. Gotta start stocking up on oil

Get an account at the dealers parts department and you'll save 15% on all parts (oil and filter) and then all you pay is your labour.

I'm going in for an oil change this morning so I'll let you guys know how much it cost me.

Just got back from Maranello BMW and the bill ended up being $230 taxes included for the oil change. Basically I saved about 50 bucks with my 15% off the parts.

Do you need a company of some sort or will they give you a personal account under your own name?

Yes, you do need a company to get a discount, but any company will do. I'm in the food business so it just goes to show you.
