Oh it's that time for my baby to be put in the hands of our trusted (hmmm) dealer network. However I remember reading somewhere, can't remember where however you can buy the service pack right up to the point you have the first service. I asked the dealer today and they didn't know and told me to phone BMW Customer Services.

Before I put myself through the joys of calling BMW CS, does anyone know if this is

a) correct? and if so;
b) where you buy the cover from?

The service pack can be bought up to 60 days after you purchase the car. It is a complete waste of money as, for your £415, you will be likely only to get the first service before the 3 years/36,000 miles run out.

Example: Me. Currently done 14,500 miles, the CBS figure says first service in another 8,000 miles so the car will have done 22,000 miles before it's first service. If the interval to the next service shoots right down from 22k to 15k the service pack will have expired as that totals 37,000 miles. They will NOT give you an early service as BMW won't let them although if it's that close then apparently the dealer has asked BMW if it's OK and BMW have said yes. That was then, before the credit crunch.

The first service is only an oil change anyway so £415 is a little bit steep!

Got a quote for £170 for oil and micro filter change which i didn't think was too bad. Was going to ask about supplying my own oil however they are charging £12/L which I think is what I would end up paying anyway.

I've done over 5,500 miles now and the OBC still shows 20,000 before the next service. I considered the service pack and decided it was not worth it.

Feel better now not going for the service pack!! done 18K in mine so far and thats the original boots... that will be the next thing!!

i have done 35k on the same boots, and hard driving too, hoping to get away with just pads service it up in 800 miles

My 320d has only done 12,500 miles but the OBC says 4000 miles to service???? Local indie updated the software about a month ago when he coded in the CD changer - that brought the service mileage right down, anyone got any ideas why? Not compalining massively seeing as I've previously been used to service intervals of 12,000 or less with Hondas I've owned previously.

Mine was due for a service at 12,500 miles - OBC flagged it up and also notified of brake fluid due in May

Car was 23 months old and was 1st service, it's all down to the type of driving, combined with the mileage and time.

A motorway cruiser will do many more miles between services than a lower mileage vehicle.

My mileage to go till next service, also dropped after some dealer work and a progman update. It had actually counted itself UP to 21,000 miles lol - came back after the update with 8,000 miles left. Actually lasted about 4,000 miles.

Part of the service is a software update to fix some "issues" with the current mapping. once thats been done, i'm going to buy a bluefin and remap to get a few extra horses under the bonnet

Thanks Red - mine was a demonstrator before I bought it last November so probably a lot of short but "spirited" driving. I do a lot of town driving mixed in with one or two M4 trips to Cardiff per week, approx 45 miles each way, so the car's probably adapting to the conditions I drive it in.

That's pretty close to mine: done 13,000, OBC says 4,00 miles till service.

Just got back from stealers who have just relieved me of £107 for a brake fluid change (2 years) nearly £100 labour for 1 hours work, I waited for it to be done and it also got a wash in that time not that it was dirty anyway, £5.83 for the fluid. They chose to add on a Service Standard Scope £22 plus Vat. This covered a safety check, when questioned they said every visit the car gets a standard service, service manual says nothing of this, things must be getting tight with service departments. One bit of good news @19,500 mls tyres are still good minimum rear 4mm (Michelins RFT) but I did not have to pay £22 for someone to tell me that ! One thing I would suggest to others is to get some jobs done together instead of separate visits raking up the standard service charge. I paid £240 for Oil service and microfilter in November 08, could have linked the jobs together and saved £22 plus Vat. Who says up North is cheaper ! to stealers.

I use the $tealer when the service light tells me, so in between I use a local specialist with factory trained master techs. I supplied all the parts and fluids and had a full service, brake fluid change, coolant change and MOT for £194 and they let me watch and have a chat

sorry to bother you with another of my stupid questions but i am clueless.
I really don't know how to find out whether the car was serviced.
I bought a used Alpina D3 (320D) with 27k on the clocks and imported it in Cyprus.
the dealer did not send me the manual neither the service log book.
so I don't know what to do.
I don't get a service light on the dash but I really want to know how this thing works.
all services show that they will need check or service after 24000 miles or sometime in 2011 and the car is currently 28500 miles on the clock. how is this possible? Oil change after 24000 miles????
does this mean that it has been serviced or has it been possibly tampered to show whatever someone wanted on the dash? Maybe i am reading the whole service info wrong? How do you read it? Does it display the mileage required from today and it decreases constantly or is that the total mileage of the car?
I already replaced all brake discs and pads the first day I got the car. how can I reinitialise the tyre pressure monitor by the way?

can BMW tell me information about the services of the car?
Maybe the UK dealer that sold this car to the previous owner? I think i can find his name and contact him from the registration plates.

any info on what to do would be greatly appreciated.

Tio,

If your car has 27K and the service reminder is saying you have 20K before next service I would take that to mean that it has been serviced recently. The service counters are countdown where it indicates how many miles/kilometers (depending upon setting) you have remaining.

If you take you key to your local BMW dealer they should be able to tell you when the car was last serviced. It shouldn't cost anything, either, to ask for this.

As for the manual and log I would suggest you write back to the dealer you bought it from and ask them to supply the missing parts.

couldn't this also mean that the last service was done by a non authorised BMW garage and they reset the OBC? or this is not possible? i have seen some devices on the net used to reset the OBC and that is what got me worried.
