Yup - have seen this before unfortunately... however the cases I've seen haven't necessarily related to the fuel pump. One of them was that fuel pressure was down, and it was diagnosed to the injectors as opposed the pump itself. On another car, the fuel pump itself had effectively packed up of its own accord. And on a third, there was a huge amount of sludge and sediment in the fuel filter and pump itself, so caused a blockage and pump failure. That was because the twattish owner had run it virtually bone dry three or four times.... muppet...

As the car says, a trip to the dealer is in order

Is running the fuel that low really an issue these days?? Surely there cant be that much, if any sludge/sediment in the bottom of a modern petrol tank and especially on a new-ish car???

The pumps are usually cooled by the fuel, so running dry isn`t a good idea. Loosing fuel pressure at very high speed can cause cylinder(s) to run lean, overheat and eventually melt the piston crown, in a surprisingly short amount of time.

Bad news Calvin

I had the same issue on my 'vert when it was almost new, that needed a new pump also.

Like Tone says tho, maybe it is not as serious as all that? Hope you get it sorted soon buddy

As rede93cab says I also had a injector failure within 1000 miles new which resulted in warning lights and a misfire. I also had the high pressure fuel pump failure a few thousand miles later same symptoms with warning lights. When checked on dealers computer different fault codes were thrown up. In total had 3 sets of injectors due to recalls, precautions. I know I,am not talking M3 but could well be a faulty injector.

Im assuming that running your car "low" on fuel ie, warning light on for a few miles etc is perfectly fine? Its the running it "dry" ie til car cuts out is the bit that does the damage, right??? I often drive til the light comes on but ive never driven a car til it completely cuts out.
