265 on 8.5"?

I want to increase the diameter of the wheels on my E91. I now have the standard 225/40 and 255/35 on 8x18 and 8.5x18. Which would work best, 235/40 + 265/35 or 225/45 + 255/40? I guess I'll be adviced against 265 on a 8.5" rim, but the 255 tire I use now actually looks narrower than the rim. It seems that 265 would give me dead parallel sidewalls.

Well, some online calculators do suggest that going from 255-265 you should move from 8.5" - 9".

Maybe look at a different tyre, one that has a thicj sidewall or bump-strip to give the impression of a wide tyre. Eage F1s Asyms do that.

On a prev car I changed from P-Zero (225/45/17) to F1 Asym's (225/45/17) and couldn't believe how much wider they look. They hung over the edge of the rim so much mroe than the Pirelli.

265's on a 8.5" are a bit too narrow. I wouldn't run anything wider then a 255 on a 8.5" Its definitely possibly, but the safe size width would be at least 9" wide. If you are looking for a tire that offers a beefier sidewall or look, take a look at the Kumho SPT (square sidewalls) or Dunlop Z1 SS (run wider). It's strange that the 255's look narrow on your current wheels. I would think 255's would be slightly beefy actually. What tire are you running?

Thanks for the advice. But it doesnt really look narrow, I want to increase the profile to fill out the wheel arhces more. I'm running Toyo Proxes T1R now. As you can see from the picture the sidwall retracts from the rim, and maybe the profile is a bit rounded too, so the wheels look kinda small when you look at the car from the side and the corners.

Increasing the width by 10 mm will increase the radius by 4-5mm I think. If I keep the width but increase profile by 5, radius will be up by 11-13 mm. Maybe that's a bit to much, but I think the M3 has even bigger radius wheels.

Or I might get a tire with a more squared off profile as you suggested, but won't the car be more prone to pulling then? Well the Toyos pull even with a rounded profile, so I guess there's more to the equation...

You are fine with the 265s, even a 275 would also be fine, I wouldn't go over 275 on the stock rims though..
