here's how badly our hubs can rust in 11k

Again, since 1/4 is totally looking like new, because it was greased by somebody, perhaps in Regensberg, with the other 3 pitted and rusted, I'm contemplating taking it in for warranty replacement. Look at the condition 3/4 are in....

I was in shock when I first saw that for myself on mine. It had all four hubs completely rusted over after only 27K miles

Hmmm....that implies it's normal, then. What I can't understand is why my front-left is greased, and looks like new. All it would have taken was a coating of grease to protect them.....and who would have done it, it wasn't me.....

Thats nothing to be scared off. You don't really need replacement for that & probably will not be covered by warranty. If you want it to look good, scrub away the rust and paint it.

Mine had rust on it when i bought it. No biggie. Even the SA and sales manager said it's nothing to worry about. I doubt it would be replaced under warranty.

There's no way that will be replaced for rust. That's a normal thing that happens to every BMW.

Its normal, but IMO not something that should happen on a $40k+ car

Gonna scrub and paint mine as soon as its over 60 degrees outside

Exactly what mine look like. Having the M6 reps makes it look even worse! There is a great DIY that diesel007 put together. I am planning on doing this very soon. Here is the thread.........

they will not replace them, ive tried a couple different times...according to BMW this is "normal" and they also tried blaming it on the type of soap i used to wash the car...

It's a car that abides by the same rules of chemistry as every other car on the road. Unless you want to ride on some steel wheels, you're going to get a chemical reaction between the hub and aluminum wheels. It's not affecting the way it drives or looks, so why does it even matter?

its actually the wheel cleaners being used... because alot of them are slightly acidic to clean the brake dust and in the end they remove the paint... The rotor is not failed, which is why BMW WILL NOT warranty them

of course it affects the way it looks. If you have a set of open spoke wheels you can see that the whole hub behind it is completely rusted out. My E46 had no rust after 3 years of owning it...after 18 months with my E90, I can't say the same...

I know you guys are right, so I can live with it. Why it matters is that the wheels were stuck to the hubs and could not come off without banging on the rims and the sidewalls. It's not pleasant having to do that when we take care of our rims, unless you pay somebody to change your snows, then you don't see what they're doing while the have your car, and that is, banging on your rims and sidewalls to get them off.

Again, it's puzzling why the left front was greased, thereby keeping it in new condition. Too bad the factory didn't do that to all 4 so they'd be mint when the wheels were pulled.

Live and learn, grease is our friend. And sandpaper.

It does affect the way it looks. That is why there are so many threads about this topic.

That DIY works great! I did it the day I got my car and 6 months later there is not a speck of rust on the hubs and I live next to a body of salt water.

Thats normal... they don't use stainless material for the wheel hub. Sometimes its so seized that you need a mallet to hammer the wheel/tire off.

cast iron = rust

there's not much else to it. wire brush, prime, and paint to get rid of the cosmetic discoloration. use antiseize on the centerbore to keep the wheels from getting stuck on.

If you wan't your wheels to get off without hammering it, try using graphite lubricant. It can handle high heat.
