new 300hp 335i turbo engine - turbo whine?

Any word if this new engine will create a shrill cabin noise. Some vehicle turbos I have found are rather noisy.

I read a review by some English magazine posted on here...

The guy said he couldn't even tell the car was powered by turbos; so there's your answer.

I dont think that BMW would put a product out that would create that much engine noise...

A 3 point shrill. Must have taken BMW engineers some fancy footwork to extract such a glorious sound.

Kudos to Yellowcreek for his skills as a comedic straightman.

Back to reality: turbo noise is something I can address with near-E90fleet level of competence, as my techie little bro is a prof in engineering that specializes in materials for turbines. He says you can have silent turbos now if that is what the engineers want. So expect the turbos on your 335 to be whisper quiet. The occupants and the tires are another story, for which engineering solutions are still lacking.

Turbo engines are also often quite quiet in the exhaust as a result of all that energy used to spin the turbines

well just go drive an audi you cant hear anything unless the windows are open and they have turbos. but once you start messign with boost pressure and stuff you can hear the wine. all i know is that the 335 is pretty loud just because of exhaust and wat not

Am I on my own or is anyone else disappointed about a turbo engine?

I don't care what the prelim reviews say, turbos have turbo lag. The response and feel of a high tech naturally aspirated engine is the essence of a BMW. Anyone can bolt on a turbo.

I would have preferred a 300bhp 3.5 liter version of the N52

Hear for yourself - watch the video in this link. There's a part where they rev the engine with the hood open.

Well, you wouldn't hear the turbos then anyway...no boost building just revving the thing in neutral!

I'll almost guarantee you hear just a little bit of a whine. Even in the new Saabs and Volvos you can hear it if you concentrate.

I get a little whining from my Steptronic in DS mode. No big deal.

I much prefer the turbo. At 5000ft in elevation the 3.5 normally aspirated engine would be making 15% less power than at sea level. With the turbo engine you are losing very little power. I'll take a turbo over non-turbo anyday!

Yes but no matter how great it is supposed to be. no turbo engine has ever matched the feel and response of the best NA ones (and BMW make some of the best). See the problem now? The point is that the fact they took this option automatically makes it worse than it could have been.

This comment will likely begin to appear once comparison tests start to come out.

i think the bmw turbo route is a good move. they can keep engine size and displacement down whilst upping the power and torque.

a bmw test occurring at the moment is using the engine/exhaust heat and through a series of recycled water (i think) pipes, use the heat to extract improved power & torque figures without increasing engine size or petrol consumption.

early rig test figures are most favourable with reasonable improvements.

Nope, I prefer the turbo engine. Better fuel economy, less weight than a “300bhp 3.5 liter ". We already know what a 3.5 liter 6 cylinder engine will do (Infiniti G35/Lexus IS350). And besides where would BMW go after the 3.5 liter inline 6? A 4.0liter V8 for the 3-series? You can only get so much out of a 3.0/3.5 liter engine without destroying its everyday drivability. Turbos are the future.

Also, Turbo lag is a relative term. You say that all turbo cars have turbo lag but even while the car is “off” the turbo it will still accelerate better than cars that don’t have a turbo or turbo lag. Case and Point; if you were to remove the turbos from a Porsche 911 turbo, the car in essence will be in a permanent “turbo lag” state. Even without the Turbo the Porsche will still out perform (in every gear at all revs) a 330i which is a car that doesn’t have Turbo lag. Go figure? Its okay to not like Turbos but the “Turbo Lag” Argument is weak (at least in the case of the 335i)

Where did you get this from? You mean to tell me that the porsche 911 Turbo engine doesn't have a good feel? And what about the Bugatti Veyron? 0-60 in 2.5 seconds and is the fastest production car ever (power everywhere in the rev range). Which NA engines do you feel have a better "feel and response" than the cars just mentioned?

I'd rather have a light weight turbo engine than some large, heavy, gas guzzling V8 (or 6 cylinder).
