if you say air filter & quite a job, I take this is the engine air filter, and same ..... set up as on a E46 320D. Filter parallel to cylinder head and difficult to find. Can't see any reason why that would smell inside and outside. You didn't leave any tools on top of the cylinder head?

Positive you didnt drop anyhting down below at all?

Even a bit of paper, wrapper etc?

It just happens that the turbo is below the airbox (well on a 320D anyway) and it is hot as fcuk.

Just a thought.

Well the only thing i can think is that there was quite a few leaves that fell out. Loads of small rocks and gravel too - I would hate to see what the airfilter was like at the recommended change of 60k miles as opposed to 20K when i changed it.

What about getting a vacuum cleaner and cleaning out whatever is trapped there? (Obviously let the area cool before inserting anything there)

What ever it was appears to have gone now. Must have been leaves or something like that burning off on the exhaust.

Thanks for the help anyway guys.

I know the job well and I can't think that anything you could have done would cause the problem when changing the air filter

Sorry
