Yes, they should be covered by the factory warranty.

Ive always been very hesitant to take my car to the dealer for rattles. Its been my experience that the car comes back with more rattles than it went in with due to the techs taking the interior apart looking for the original rattle.

I think there is a limit like 10 or 12k miles for rattles, at least my 2000 e46 was that way, but maybe they changed it. But I did have my leather sport driver side seat replaced at 48k due to wear in the bolster in my e46 under warranty. Its worth a try to take it in.

If it's in warranty they'll work to fix rattles. Your dealer just bills BMWNA for their hourly rate anyway, and work is work.

If you actually want your rattles fixed, I strongly recommend reproducing the noise with the tech in the car with you, so you can both agree on exactly what noise is bothering you. Otherwise they'll claim to have fixed something (which may have been real, but that you never noticed) and wind up missing the important tick or rattle or humm that was bothering you.

That being said, I'm sure they'd fix rattles out of warranty, just you'd have to pay for their time.

And a 10-12k limit on fixing noises? I've never heard of such a thing.

I took my Evo back to the dealer when the car was 11 months old for rattles, good thing because they said there's a one year time limit for "adjustments". This was just Mitsubishi though, surely the Bavarians would not subject us to such blasphemy...

That's always the risk when trying to remove a rattle. However, it's my experience there is identically no change to the rattles as they invariably claim they could not find any rattles.

Anyone else get the tuning fork type of metallic rattle from the b-pillar? I'm thinking it's part of the seatbelt mechanism.

And, yes, rattles should be covered under warranty, but make sure you describe it as accurately as possible to a tech or take him along for a ride. There are a lot of stories on here about people taking it in for a certain rattle, and taking it home with two new ones.... So it's best to make sure the tech knows what he's trying to fix.

The dealers here won't do sh!t when it comes to rattles. They claim that it's only covered for the first year and beyond that is considered wear & tear. I have to drive to a dealer 40km away to get anything done.

40km isn't far by any means. A lot of people here have to drive much farther than that.

But I shouldn't have to given that there are 5 or 6 dealers within the city...

Well, since it is technically up to them to decide whether these issues are covered or not, then technically, yes, you should have to.

By contrast I couldn't even get BMW to fix my clicking armrest which would require 0 time to locate and diagnose, it just needed some felt tape where my elbow sits. I found one individual, a foreman, who took care of all my car's problems but he moved to another dealer 40km out of town so I have no choice.
