How do we protect our lovely m door sills from scratches?

just installed my lovely m e90 door sills today. looks exactly like longtran's door sills. the rear door sills are plain without the m logo. unlike the less cosmetic stock matt black bmw door sills, the m door sills has a lacquer over the silver trim. seems very vulnerable to scratches. thought of using 3m transparent stickers but may cause it to turn yellow. any ideas from the rest of the guys with m door sills/ m sport package?

It is what it is, if you want to have sex with boys do it man, the only thing that can get in the way of your dreams are the cops.

Just be careful. If you take it in for service , just place clear plastic packing tape to cover them. This is what I use to do with my other car and never had a problem. 3m clearguard should be fine and it shouldnt turn yellow on you.

This is almost like buying gold tiles for the roof of your house but being concerned about rain/snow potentially damaging it.

Not sure what would be worse: living a life worrying about protecting the sills from scratches at all times or living a life with sills with scratches.

the main culprits for scratching the door sills will be my kids . beware of ladies with high heels shoes when they hop into the car.

i realise the paradox. door sills are meant to be stepped on, yet i bought them for cosmetic reasons to go with the rest of the m stuff. guess if the stock door sills look less boring , i would not have spent the money.

I agree they are vulnerable to scratching as the plastic does seem very soft, but hey they're only like $40, so I can replace them in a few years...

hi calvino, u should be able to buy the doors ills from your main dealership. they look nice, cosmetic but are not as hardy and scratch resistant as the stock bmw sills. just found out today when i collected the parts and installed it, after looking closely at it and feeling it.

I paid €35, but you're right: I did only install the front two. I didn't think it was worth bothering with the rears and nobody seems to have noticed

What? Who steps on door sills when getting into a E90??

If those strips get scratched then you paintwork around them will too. My (standard) M sill strips are un marked, and I can't think of any car I've ever seen with scratched sills there.

They're far to narrow to step on. and the door seal & lip prevents anyone dragging their feet over the strips. At most they'd catch the painted sill lip.

Really - there's more to worry about.

I was going to, but it's so simple I didn't bother. Basically, you just rip the old ones off & push the new plates into the existing holes using the clips supplied.

so the old one has the clips attached to it and the new one has the clip separate? How many clips if you don't mind. thanks.

edit: i see one yellow clip in first photo for the m sill.

Yes, the //M ones have separate yellow clips and you have to slide them into the holders & align them all up with the existing holes. If I recall correctly, there are five holes/clips along each side. The hardest part is getting the old clips out without breaking them, because then they fall inside the sill.

yeah, you def do not want to break the clip and allow it to fall into the sill housing cuz when you drive you will hear that ever annoying rattles

Thanks for the info on the clips.

Gawd damn! You took the words right out of my mouth bro. So many obsessive people on this site.

Obsessives must go completely nuts when a rock hits the front bumper, hood or windshield resulting in a slight chip, dent or crack. It probably sends them into a state of hysteria and/or disarray.

That's it! I'm starting a thread about how to keep my tire tread clean while driving.

trust me, you will forget all about lifting high enough when you are in a running late or if it is rainning, your mind aint gonna be thinking about lifting feet high. Best solution is just let it be and enjoy the scratch free sill while it last.
