At the risk of opening up the diesel-petrol (gas) debate again...
I switched to diesel back in 1989 and haven't looked back. Every time I change cars (almost every year of late), I dutifully testdrive the equivalent petrol model (which is invariably cheaper to buy), but they feel so feeble unless you are prepared to drive around at 6000rpm all the time (which I never do). Diesels are also really easy to modify and I have already arranged for my 330d to be remapped to produce approx. 285hp & 620Nm some time late August or early September (need to rack up some more miles to loosen the engine first). If you can put up with the ignoble noise (this is getting a lot better, though...), it's a win-win situation.
