HPFP or turbo? Feels catastrophic!

I took delivery of my new 09 135i 5 days ago and all was going swimmingly well until under moderate acceleration I heard a loud hissing sound with severe loss of power. No warning lights came on. It had been starting instantly beforehand. I'm still running it in so haven't done anything crazy and it's only done 400 miles.

My gut feeling is that a turbo or both are screwed but I have read a lot about HPFP failure. The whole situation feels pretty catastrophic and I can't see a good outcome.

It's being picked up today and I'm fuming! Anyone heard of such early problems or further advice?

It doesn't sound like it's the fuel pump to me especially on a car just built. I hope they can resolve it quickly for you though, I would be gutted to have that happen to me especially on a brand new car.

Mine should be delivered within the next couple of weeks so I hope the same doesn't happen. Sounds like maybe something wasn't installed correctly at build

135Dan,

Sounds more like intercooler piping or other related plumbing.

Shouldn’t be serious once sorted but I wouldn't drive the car until it's fixed!

Got it sorted by the BMW recovery/rescue guy. There was a loose clip on some "plumbing" as Mad said. May well have been an intercooler pipe. He reckoned it wasn't fitted properly in the factory. He assured me no damage was done and when we took it for a test run it was back to normal torquey acceleration without the hissing. I'm simmering down now and am grateful it was nothing more complicated or damaging.

Cheers guys

135Dan,

Glad it's sorted. You can now enjoy the cars full potential. That is, after a few more hundred miles running the car in.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead, but how loud was the hissing? Could you hear it with your windows up?

Well she's fully run in now and I am really enjoying the full potential. What an amazing car!

Mega Man - yes I could hear the hissing with the windows up. It was like a hand dryer in a public toilet (rest room to our friends over the pond). It was coming from the engine bay on the left side.

^^^Yeah when I read the initial post I immediately thought "Piping going to the intercooler". Especially since you had that loss of power but the vehicle was still running fine otherwise.

Ah, I have a "whistling" sound when I'm pushing full throttle. It's only audible with the windows down, I'm assuming this is turbo spool.

Just thought I'd find out for my own piece of mind. Congrats with getting your car repaired and running strong!
