Question to all those with an E93
My father keeps scaring me about the hard top roof. He keeps saying " wait until something happens to it... what if it gets stuck.... etc. etc.
For those E93 owners, what is your take on the retractable roof? Has anybody had any issues with theirs? |

I just replied to your other post...seems like you have a lot of concerns with this purchase.
But for what its worth, they began selling this hardtop system in 2007 on the 328/335. No major issues...the M3 uses the same technology. Whats your concern anyways? The car has FULL warranty!! I thought my dad was nuts...because he thinks everything is gonna break , and thinks everything and everyone is out to get him and is going to cost him more money in the long run. But even HE didn't bring up this fear when I bought my M3.

Yes Lots, but this is on my wifes 335 E93 that was a very early production. We have had problems with squeeks & rattles that have never been totaly rectified after many trips back to the dealer. There was a problem with the front latches that appeared on one our trips to Tennessee right after the car was in the shop for the same issue that made the car especially annoying to drive for 14 hours & back.My wife notices very little of this,so she is happy with the car and if it is warmer than 10c she has the roof down all the time.

I have not had any problems what so-ever with my hard top. Just don't try to do anything like rolling while putting it up or down.
I had a 2002 325ic (softtop) before this, and it did stick a couple of times, but it was only when I was operating it when I shouldn't (too much stuff in the trunk, rolling in stop and go traffic, etc.) +1 on SlammedM3's comment...that is what the warranty is for. While there are a lot of moving parts and stuff, it is a BMW, not a Pontiac so I think you should be pretty safe.

As for the warranty thing...well no one wants to have to bring the car in for warranty work either. But its not a common thing, so I wouldn't even worry!

apparently the reason you can't operate the top while moving is that the rear license plate is obscured when the top is going down or up, so DOT made bmw disable operation while rolling, i agree its annoying
I havent had any issues, but there is a little bit of rattling that I figure is normal for a convertible (probably much better than softtops)... although I live right downtown where the roads are absolute ----. I find when im up in markham or out in mississauga you notice the rattles less because the roads are smoother. |

You are welcome marky, looking forward to meet with you too!
The only issue I have had with my E93 is leaks (which dealer will fix in spring when car comes out of storage), but other then that no rattles or windnoise. Plus you have full 4yrs/80K warranty like others said, and knowing your track record, you will be driving the M5/M6 in exactly 2 yrs from now |

The only problem I had with the roof was when my wife was driving it and decided to take it down not knowing that you need to make sure there are no obstructions in the boot area! Obviously there was an obstruction so it became stuck and we had to call out the BMW Engineer who removed the obstruction and got it going again.
Only minor complaint is when I take it for a jetwash and you direct the jet really close to the windows, you can get just a little water through but I suppose there is no way around that. The car will protect against very heavy rain but not a high-pressure jet wash directed exactly at the window edge. No problems whatsoever otherwise!
