inexpensive things i can do to keep temps down?
going out to a bmwcca track weekend in about a month's time, but taking my car into the shop to get some things installed next week...what are some inexpensive things, like fluid swaps, etc., i can do to try to keep the operating temperature a little better under control? last time i tracked it, temps got a little higher than i wanted them to be, and i know i can't fully remedy that, but just looking for things to improve it a little. thanks!

get proper track pads. that won't keep temps down, but stock pads are not meant to be operated at high temps, so you'll be using pads that were designed to be operating at the higher temps.

Dont worry about your engine temps. I have aftermarket pulleys in and the temp gauge still didn't cross the 250 f line. i've seen M5's running 250-265 on the track with no problem.You'll be fine.

Several forum members, including myself, have reported temps in the 255-260F range on the track--even on hot July days. As others have said that is completely normal. But, I'd watch out for those "scoops". They do block a part of your radiator.

The engine temps that you are experiencing is the same range as I am getting which is nothing to concern yourself with.My Z06 used to see over 300f in long track sessions.The transmission has its own cooling system with a dedicated electric pump & cooler,so that is a non issue.I have problems with my diff getting too hot & clunking on a track where it was a lot of second & third gear stuff with a fair bit of wheelspin on corner exit so that is something that I will have to keep an eye on.
The only other thing is brakes and that can be rectified with proper track pads & fluid. Go & Enjoy! |

I wish there was a water temp gauge. I was seeing ~260-280 degrees at TWS in 50 degree weather, which is about the same as the E46. Seems a little high, I hope that this reflective of a closed loop decision to maintain this temp rather than a capacity issue like it was on the E46. 110 degree summer track days may not be possible in the E90 otherwise.
