anyone owned or thought of buying a 911
I have just been looking at the prices of them, and they seem very affordable. The one that caught my eye was a 99 carrera 2 61000 miles with gt2 kit price £16k.
I have just done an insurance quote £1200 so only and extra £600 on top of the bm. Just wondering what the service intervals are and running costs are like? Before my ban i owned an evo 8 so used to high running costs servicing etc. I also do about 6000 miles a year so could use as a daily driver. What do you recon guys? phil

So your talking 996. Running cost won't be that much to be fair, OPC service will cost you about £500 minor / £1000 major at only 6K p/a you;ll only have to service once per year think the recommendations for a 996 are once every 10K/ year.
With any 996 OR Porsche of that era I only have three letters for you RMS. I've owned a 1977 911 SC targa, used it everyday, it had 200.000 miles on the clock and didn't really give me any problems whatsoever my 2000 986 Boxster S was a different matter entirely. I'd 100% have another air cooled 911 I would not ever have a Boxster again due to a frankly horrendous experience of a car that had only done 30.000 miles and had full OPC history. So me being me, I'd say look older you'd get an absolutely cracking SC or 3.2 Carrera for £16K just be aware the clutches are like CONCRETE, absolutely fine once you are used to them I came from an MGB and for the first week didn't know what had hit me lol the modern 911s don't have very heavy clutch, just to be aware if you sit in lots of traffic!

Factor in an inspection cost by a Porsche expert - you really dont want one that has the RMS issue and no warranty!!
MPG will be reasonable, servicing is ok if you use a specialist rather than a Porsche dealer. Test drive one - you will know instantly if you love it or hate it. |

Oh gods someone brought up the car subject on the off topic forum now we are in trouble. We can manage 3 pages of differing, reasoned, opinions on drugs without resorting to arguments but cars are a risky subject.

I have been going a bit 911 crazy recently.. I love them!
When I make some more monies I WILL buy a brand spanking new 911 4S, or a GT3 if I make a silly amount of monies!

To the O/P, sorry, don't know anything about 911's of that age. All I would suggest is if you could get a newer one there is the option of getting a full Porsche manufacturers warranty available upto a 9 year old vehicle, as long as the car has a full Porsche service history. Only down side being that they're approx. £900 p.a. |

The only 996 I like are the Turbo and GT2.
The early ones look w*nk compared to the facelift ones with the turbo headlights. Try go for a facelifted one with turbo kit.

Always fancied a 911 since I was in short trousers.
Never been a better time to pick up a great deal on a 911 either. Not very practical with kids though..... |

911 is an iconic car
If a nice example falls within your budget range and you feel you can live with one, then why not? You only live once, might as well enjoy it! |

Personally i think the 911 is an awsome bit of kit but i'd only consider a 997 and you need to go for the S model. I bought my 997 C2S very well - great colour GT Silver and every option bar sat nav. If i buy another one i'd have to get one with sat nav. Ive modified mine with some awsome GT3 bits and it looks ten times the car i originally bought and thats been proved as ive just been offered over £5,000 over what i paid for it, amazing considering the climate. I have noticed that prices of certain "fruity" cars are stabilizing ie CSL's, E92 M3's, 997's etc - so i agree with Oli that now might be the time to buy before the bargains start to vanish. Im not 100% going to sell my 997 although i have agreed to the sale in principle. The more i drive it in the dry the more im astonished by the rear wheel grip - its staggering at times!! Only problem is you can tell that if it were to go on you, it would go BIG style and take no prisoners. Its going to be almost impossible to replace it for similar money in terms of looks, drivability and handling. The ONLY thing that lets it down, only slightly, is the very slight lack of power in my opinion. A car that is verging on super car status should really pack a bigger punch in terms of out and out power. Dont get me wrong ive blown away almost everything on the road ive played with and ive managed to out drive an RS4 saloon and an Aston Martin Vantage V8 on the M11. But its the twistys where the 997 C2S comes into its own and i genuinely dont think that the C4S is worth the extra money. Good luck with your find and make sure you hold out for the right spec - sat nav/PCM, PASM, PSM, good colour combo's and ideally OPC warranty - i also personally think that the Sports Chrono pack is another nice option to have.

As Phil said it has a GT3 kit which is not the same as a Turbo/GT2 but is as good as it gets. Quote:
Agree a specialist inspection is a must a can be done for as little as £100 - £200 by an independant specialist. |

Are you sure you've not tried drugs Carl, because clearly your eyesight is distorted! Cack and W*nk are words that I have never heard to descibe a 996 Porsche.

Explain what part of this car is w*nk or cack? It is a 1999 996, yes a GT3, but Phil did say the car he is looking at has a kit.

I dont like that.
It looks better than the RS but its the out of date headlights that look so gay. The turbo lights which are on facelift 996 are so better. and looks are of personal opinion. Like i said, i only like the turbo and GT2. Burt i spose a Facelift carrera s would suffice. The Turbo headlights look dated anyhow, the non turbo headlights are horrible.
