OMG What Have I Done ??? :D

Well in a final moment of rather typical Porscha eccentricity I was all set to submit my application for Maths after not pressing the send button last time as I was going to stay in Derby (now I have decided AGAIN I want a shot at other places, maybe a bit late lol) to eventually get a nice little job as a manager, teacher etc. but oh no I started looking over all the research I did for Automotive / Motor Sports engineering I had my personal statement ready, all my research done and my own desire to have you, the taxpayer to pay for me to mess about with cars for three or even four years just took over so I thought if I don't try I just don't know! Having picked my subjects for this area and the fact I could do some tasty mods to my MR2T cheap (OK, OK only joking on that one ) I applied to -

Derby, Motorsport Technology
Sheffield, Motor Sports Engineering Management
Loughborough, Automotive Engineering
Nottingham, Mechanical (Automotive) Engineering
Staffordshire, Motorsport Technology (last choice as it's a rather long commute)

Because lets face it if you can get away with (eventually) being paid to mess about with motorcars the world can't be all that bad????

I was a mechanic for many years.

I went back later to Uni and got a B.Sc. Hons in Mathematics. Live in Switzerland with international clients.

Would I go back to lying about on my back, outside in weather like now with ice running down my neck for a pittance of pay - NO. It is not glamourous. It is long hard, physical work with grumpy, shirty owners who want to save money and want their car back NOW. You will never get paid, or earn enough money to "mess around with motors". Without the slightest hint of sexism - it is not an ideal path for a girl. Your hands will be as tough as leather with all the oil. Rough and scarred with cuts and welding burns. You will sweat the dirt/oil out during an evening no matter how clean your hands were when you left the garage. You'll have to watch your back as you will constantly be leaning over bonnets, contorting under dashboards or holding up exhausts for long periods of time (with the blood draining from your arms). You'll be very lucky that when the evening comes you will have the time, energy or motivation to work on your own car. If you do, you'll fall asleep standiing up in your oil-soaked overalls when you get back home - no social life. Been there. Have the T-Shirt.

Whereas, nowadays I have time to lie on my back in summer and work on my own cars doing anything I like because my work path affords me the time and money to do it. Let's face it - that is what you really want to do.

Stop p*ssing about, Porscha. Either go to Uni and get moving, or stay put continuing to p*ss about dreaming

I am being purposefully blunt. All meant in good nature

Thanks

Having gone into it, it's less practical that you think, most modules are theoretical and fit in with other parts of engineering and management, to be fair I wouldn't be doing it if it was mainly practical, proper heavy work, no offence taken by any of comments as I know full well myself that I am not cut out to be a mechanic I am plainly not physically able for it!

These are the type of modules studied;
Design Skills
Design and Manufacturing
Engineering Mechanics
Fundamental Engineering Mechanics
Materials Under Stress
Mathematical Skills for the Engineer
Motor Sports Fundamentals
Solids, Liquids and Gases
Thermofluids
Enterprise and Technology

It depends where I go, 3 are MEng (4 years) and 2 are BSc.

Blame me when modern cars loose most driver aids, get lighter and better looking

With those types of course descriptions and degree levels you will be specialising a little.

If you fancy it, go for it. You won't be messing about with cars though

With the type of courses (numerical/maths) you could still switch more easily after one year than some other courses.

Why not apply for everything you can ? Carpet bomb.

Then choose if you get replies.

good summary of being a mechanic Dave3, but you missed a few thing out about being a mechanic. the skinned knuckles, the stench of diesel after you managed somehow to poor the contentse of the filter down your sleave. the gearbox oil in your hair when you are lying on your back and the oil drains out the end of the gearbox because the cap you installed has fallen out.

your right about your back!!! sometime you might feel glamourous standing there eyeing up the crumpet as they walk by in the summer, you grin whistfully at them with a wink, then go inside and notice in the wing mirror of a car that you have the hugest splog of crap on your face and them realise just why she gave you a wide birth.

i used the 10 years in mechaniking on tucks and cars as a foundation for what i eventually landed up doing.

i now like Dave3 do what i want to do and can afford to do the things i want to do and have the funds to do it with.

Porsche, it's a good life, but you will be doing it a long time, and i think thats the point.

Yes it is a bit more specialist I kind of did put the "messing about with cars" bit for effect

Will see what happens.......if I get rejected I'll probably still do Maths!

I can only apply to one type of course (well technically you could apply to five different but only one personal statement), 5 times!
