BMW Performance Exhaust for 128i installed...Video/pics Here

Thought I'd give my impressions on the BMW performance exhaust that was installed on my 128 last week.

I had the performance air intake installed not too long ago. The exhaust completes a pretty nice package. Don't expect any neck-breaking increases in horsepower and torque. However, the car is definately more responsive. The engine seems to rev a bit more freely. Step on the gas while cruising at 2,000 rpms and you get a solid (but not neck-snapping) push in the back. The car is even more driveable and more fun now. I didn't purchase the intake and exhaust for the sound but let me tell you...it's incredible. I get a kick finding excuses to accelerate at every opportunity which doesn't do my gas mileage any good.

At low rpms you get a nice low growl. As the rpms increase the growl becomes higher pitched and tighter. Let off the gas slightly when you get to cruising speed and things quiet down. There is absolutely NO drone.

As for cost of the intake/exhaust package I did not pay MSRP as some others had done previously. I have to thank Dan at United BMW for this.

Here are some before and after pics plus a video for your viewing.

This def a great install. I heard a dealer demo in the showroom with a performance exhaust and it was GREAT! I recommend that you take some exterior drive by, take off videos. Although I have a e92 328i, I too have gotten a performance exhaust. Granted the 128i doesn't come with additional piping.

I was thinking about getting the Intake and the Exhuast can you tell Dan to hook it up?

I'm presuming you live in the Atlanta area. Check out Dan's website and give'm a call. Dan is very responsive and has the best prices that I'm aware of for BMW performance parts. Also, their service department has done several local 1Addicts' cars.

Glad you're enjoying it! The growl is especially intoxicating when you first startup the car in the morning. I sometimes leave the door open on startup just to hear it.

Ordered my PE today and will be paying just under 700 minus tax when it arrives at the dealer Monday. Is that about how much you paid? Anyway, more importantly they could not give me a yes or no (very shocking) to whether or not the PE order comes with the clamp sleeve that is used to cover the cut behind the stock exhaust. Did your PE order come with the clamp in the box?

I really appreciate this write-up since it is the ONLY detailed write-up on the entire internet for the 128 BMWPE, THANK YOU! Also, your video sound made me choose the BMW over MAGNA, remus is mute compared to the BMW, and MAGNA isn't too loud either!

Any answers are appreciated! I'm speechless that 2 different parts guys at the dealer AND the dealership I called that is out of town still could not answer if it comes with a single clamp. I would be so skeptical about it if when I ordered my BMW CF spoiler from the dealer I had to pay EXTRA for the adhesive kit... it should be a no brainer to include necessary parts like clamps/adhesive. $700 before tax is a good price, I think I paid about $800 total and the shop I bought it from was nice enough to put it on for a very small fee. Maybe $900 total after taxes, shipping, and install. Generally speaking, it is an expensive mod.

Mine came with a clamp too.

The sheer sound alone this exhaust makes will silence the loudest performance / price nay-sayers. It's that good - way better than what the video above produces.

I'll say this till the end of time: best mod for 'you' and still my favorite 'car part'. If you have a manual, playing with the overrun or downshifting is intoxicating.

Thank you Daft! I expected that to be the case, that the sound would be better than the video. On video comparison, the BMWPE was the best choice for sound between the 3 options. And also a big plus that it is not a cat or res delete. Love the simplicity of the axle back, and the knowledge that it is superior original BMW quality.

This weekend is going to SUCK! I hate waiting for parts! It makes time stand still to me. Especially something as exciting as this.

I will be making a DIY for my Coupe install, as well as a video of the removal/reinstall. I know it's probably a bit late for it, but hopefully it will inspire some people to purchase and do it themselves. My dealer said there are only 30 left in the country and there has not been one ordered from them aftermarket ever! I bet the part number is discontinued

Any ideas for a carbon fiber muffler? Also, is this a cat or axle back... and which would your recommend and why?

I would really like the carbon fiber tips, not sure if this is available on a muffler already, or if it's tips only and need to be added to any muffler.

New to the forum. Checked out your post/vid/pics. Helped me decide to go with BMW's performance exhaust on my 128 as well. Agree with you. Sounds and looks great. No drone w/ mine as well. Thanks for taking the time to post!

Congrats and welcome, the best is yet to come. Mine sounds much better now at 10k miles than it did at the start, meaning you've got a lot more to enjoy! After 5k miles or so, the transition and change of tone above 4k RPM became much more distinct and playable. I used to only hear that gentlemanly-V12ish-snarl under full load. Now, literally, all the time.

Thanks for the welcome! Yes, I've heard from others that the sound gets better w/ mileage. Looking forward to hearing the development. It's a good mod to the 128 I think.

I purchased the PE after we ordered my wife's 2011 128i Convertible M-Sport 6MT, and installed it the day the car was delivered. It took awhile to "burn in", but 2 1/2 years later, it still sounds great. The one I got came with a clamp and the trickiest part of the install was making sure the original pipe was cut at the proper place to match everything up length-wise. The clamp secured it very nicely without welding so I can put the original back on if that ever becomes necessary. Pretty great sound with the top down!

I just put the BMWPE on this week. WOW. I don't even turn the radio on anymore. Sounds amazing. Not obnoxious at all. Have done two highway trips with it, dont hear too much drone.
