What kind of polish should I use if I dont have swirl marks?
I wash my car the right way so I dont have any swirl marks but I do have lots of water marks due to rain.
I want to polish the car and seal/wax it soon so here I deciding on what to use. I will use DoDo wax hence my other thread but I am not sure if I should just go to a final polish or if I should start out with a medium polish. |

Always start with the least abrasive polish possible that will handle the job. Unfortunately you won't be able to determine what this is untlil you do a test spot.
will you be using a machine?

Yes. I will be ordering the Porter Cable starter kit from DI when I order the wax and sealent and everything else. My paint isnt that bad its just those stupid water marks and paint chips. The paint chips can stay as they are on both bumpers, I am waiting to order the M Tech bumpers. |

I would reccommend Menzerna's Final Polish II with either a white or black pad. the white pad will give you a little extra bite over the black pad, but they're both used with finishing polishes. I get all my stuff from Detailed Image. If that doesn't get the job done, you could then go to more of a cutting polish. http://www.detailedimage.com/Polish-C9/ I'd wait a few days for some of the pros to sign in, I am a self proclaimed "mid level detailer". I can't really give you any comparisons from a ton of different products, since I've only used Griots and Menzerna polishes. I will say however I have had great results with the Menzerna products, including Full Molecular Jacket, which as a sealant gave me incredible results on my black saph.

I was already planning on getting Menzerna's Final Polish II and the Porter Cable starter kit comes with white and black pads so I should be good so far. I would like more input before I blow $400.

Good plan. There are some really knowledgeable pros on this forum. I'd be interested to know how you like your Dodo juice....that's something I haven't tried yet. good luck bro.

Menzerna PO85RD is what I perfer.....(That might be final polish II) I just dunno.
I know the Menzerna Products by their product codes..... Have you ever looked at your paint in a high intensity halogen light? That would point out all of the swirls that you have |

Yes no swirls. I have a dual 500w halogen set that I use every few weeks (now months, too cold most of the time)

I agree. Most, if not all, of menzerna's products are great to work with. On my car I use Final Polish II, followed by a coat of 3M Imperial machine Glaze and finish it off with P21S. If I have swirls to remove, I also use Menzerna Intensive Polish. My car is Jet Black

I think 106FF with a white pad is a good light polish.

Clean towels is really important too. It will swirl if there is still product left on the paint. Think of trying to clean 20 windows using the same towel for all 20. By the 20th you will be smearing the glass. So use clean towels

To those recommending 85RD -- do you guys actually see any difference in finish between PO106FF and PO85RD? I always thought there wasn't really a difference. I know 106FF has a touch more cut to it, but I thought they finished the same.
I've been using 106FF for a light polish as well as a finishing polish after SIP. To my eyes, it finishes perfectly, but then again, I haven't used 85RD, just read about it. Don't make me go out and buy some for myself. Can you actually see any difference? Are you applying it with a black pad?

fminus does sip, then 106ff, then 85rd.. i just do po83 then 85rd..thinking about adding the 106ff step. also the pad of choice makes a big diff..i have gotten water marks out with 85 rd and an orange pad..some i had to use sip and an orange pad..so it all depends.. but like others said always start with the least agressive polish/pad combo..then use diff pads...if it doesn't work go to the next polish in line like 106ff,,if it still doesn't work even with an orange or green pad go to sip and so on.

+1, I have never used FPII so I cant compare, but I detailed my buddies black Explorer, which was desroyed, I used SIP and he saw it he was amazed but he came back later after the 85Rd step and was blown away(before LSP). His exact words "What the fuck did you do to it" Like SpecC said with a black pad its amazing!!!
