M-tech steering wheel
this is basically for a couple people who weren't sure that the M-tech wheel would fit and were told by dealers that the airbag wouldn't work, etc etc etc,
First off, I am sorry guys for not doing the full DIY, but I have done this before in my e46 and it is basically the same here and literally I was done in just under 30 minutes. Second, a big thanks to vlkwagen for the wheel which already had the M trim plate and the airbag wiring, he went to the incredible factory performance one so I got all sorts of things with his (the inner control doughnut shaped thing that I didn't need to use (it's different on the performance wheel because there are more wires for the G read outs and such). Third- go to this link, http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11825, special thanks to bavarian19 at e90post for the full DIY, remember 46 ft-lbs of torque on the torque wrench and you're good to go. All fits, all works, no errors, no lights, etc! *Disclaimer- the M steering wheel really does feel different and inspires more spirited and aggressive driving. Please abide by all local speed and traffic safety laws. Pics show before and after.

that's awesome, I'd like to do that with my car but was told all the BS about I'd have to get an airbag, now I'll have to get parts and install them myself. Thanks for letting us know that it can be done.

1 Addict, I could probably just order the wheel right? I don't really need the M plate, I just like the wheel itself. Do you know if I can order the wheel any where? Or do I have to get it from BMW?

yes, I believe you can- the back of the face plate trim and the wheel may not line up perfectly becuase the stock one is curved where as the M one meets an angle on the sides on the way up, But as far as the face plate screwing on the locations should be the same and the faceplate being rounded/curved takes up more space that does the M wheel backing so it would not be noticeable- who knows maybe they even line up fine, I didn't check. But you can be pretty sure that it works because the e90post DIY i posted here has it done that way and that's what I would have done if I didn't find one with the M plate, so it should be fine.

Did you originally have a non-sports pkg car? I am in the process of changing my non-sports car over. I hate the sports seats, but like everything else.

I have installed the following- sport seats in leatherette (looking to do a swap for leather interior if I can find someone who wants to trade) have added the high gloss vinyl over the chrome window trim to replicate the shadowline trim, put in the M tech wheel and shift knob and now just need the ebrake handle and it's basically a sport pack car! a couple minor things are still different- you can still see the chromeline trim on the door sills and the sport seats power bolsters don't work as I need to get the adapter plug for each side- its about $12 per side but it's also a lot of work to install. and then I did basically a full assist retrofit- but didnt sign up for assist so I just have the bluetooth- if you search under my name you can prob see all the threads I have done on the stuff

The only items I am changing are the shift knob w/boot, steering wheel, and ebrake handle. I prefer the chrome trim outside and the standard seats.

actually after doing the black out, I did the grill too, I am not sure about it. I really really love the blacked out shadowline look but the chromeline trim is nice too, especially on a black car with tint because it helps define the window line, especially the hoffmeister kink- as far as the seats, I thought I would be okay with the stock ones when I first got it but it turns out I was just too used to the sport seat feeling from my e46, so when I saw a set of sport seats come up from a member for only $500 for the pair that he took out of his 135i at only a few hundred miles I had to jump on them!

I am too big for the Sport Seats. Ironical I fit nice and snug in the regular seats.

I am hoping to find someone on 1addicts as you did, for the steering wheel. Otherwise, I will order it from this guy:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BMW-E...Q5fAccessories He has sold quite a few to e90post members.

Here is some general info for everyone else:
The Sport Wheel on the 3 Series is the Standard Wheel on the 1 series (Right Pict). The Sport Pkg Wheel on the 1 series is often referred to as the M-Tech wheel on the 3 Series (Left Pict). See the attached pictures (I mod'd Add1ct's):
