DIY Weight Reduction

If you were going to reduce the weight of the vehicle, with out sacrificing the aesthetic look of it (exterior and interior), or losing any functionality (radio, quality of sound), etc., what could be removed?

Remove rear seats, install CF Hood, trunk, lightweight wheels/tire combo, lightweight battery, swap the OEM airbox for an intake, look into acid dipping the chasis.

Are the performance seats any lighter? I'm assuming you don't have Convenient Access, Power seats, or automatic transmission? You could remove the trunk lining, the hood insulation, keep your trunk empty - stuff like that. If you want to spend a lot of money, you can go for the CF hood like mentioned above.

How heavy are the stock wheels? What's a good alternative?

As per Lester's post how much weight could Convenient Access add? Understandably, Power Seats and an auto tranny add weight, but Convenient Access?

I'm with you on keeping the trunk empty, and removing the trunk lining and the hood insulation (maybe SOME of the sound deadening materials); how much would a CF hood weigh in comparison to the stock one?

i'm not sure if it's a marketing ploy or if it really makes a difference (it makes sense to me) but BMW always boasts the 50/50 weight ratio in their vehicles, would lightening parts be significant enough to throw this off

The number isn't EXACTLY 50/50 if I recall it's something like 53% in the front 47% in the back. So the best idea would be to get something like a CF hood.

Removing your OEM seats with a lightweight one piece job would be the biggest weight saving measure...

LOL I get a kick out of you guys trying to cut weight and try to make their cars .01 of a second faster .... LOL if you where looking for a solid base to turn into a race car .... there are better and cheaper alternatives ..... now if you are a weekend warrior, why not just remove the rear and passenger seats for the time you play with the car ..... i'm sure that would help.

I don't know if this is the case with the 1 series but some manyfacturers are using aluminium for their hoods..... thus, CF would not really be that much of an upgrade! Wheels however, it is possible to find much lighter and reducing weight at the wheels helps with the rotational mass!

Running around with only half a gas tank would save a few pounds. Also consider what tires you are gonna buy, their weight can vary as much as 3 lbs per corner, and that's unsprung weight! Could people with Comfort Acces remove their locks and hide the blanks with UK spec caps? Non-sunroof panel for the roof could also help...

IIRC, they may be a pound or two heavier.

I would vote moving to the Recaro Sportster CS, which is the same seat, sans airbags.

What would those be...like...0.1g each? I'm sure they're also there to block solid particles from going down there...but does anyone actually know what purpose they serve or where those inlets go?:iono:

If you remove all of those items from the trunk, and you break down or have an accident, what are you going to do? How much does the warning triangle, first aid kit, and car tool kit weigh? IMO, it's just not worth any weight savings.

I gotta agree w/corpsman. The only worthwhile reductions I see in that list are the sound insulation in the bonnet, and of course the headlight cleaning system.

I could possibly say the rear headrests as well, but how much do they weigh?

Perhaps the moral to this story is our cars are fat.

IMO, the 135i is plenty powerful, but it could afford to lose some weight...even as a daily driver.

I have a bit of money to spend...and I'm thinking:

Cross-drilled rotors (front)
Suspension upgrade

Does anyone know if those parts are lighter than stock?
