Yet another RFT warning

I am sick of getting these warnings. Anyone else have this problem?

If this is going to be habitual I am going to ditch this POS car.

Lacrosse's probably talking about the low pressure warning on the run flats. If your tires are inflated correctly, your TPS maybe working improperly. Take it to the dealership for warranty replacement/repair.

BMW installs electromagnets in the wheels, so they attract as many nails as possible. It's all part of their collaboration with 'big rubber' to sell more tires.

Changing temperatures, like from summer to fall to winter, will have you adding air anyway since the pressure in your tire lowers as it gets colder. I check mine at least every two weeks.

The only time my TPMS warning came up was two weeks after I got my car and the temperature dropped 20 or 30 degrees outside.

I often have problems when I park the car in the garage at night. I leave in the morning and park at work where the outdoor temperature is 30 or so degrees colder. If I go back out to the car after an hour or so, I'll get the light on. If I leave the car until lunchtime once its warmed up outside, then the car is just fine. I was originally under the impression that this system factored in temperature, but that's obviously not the case.

Apparently, bmw has the sensor system calibrated to throw a light when the tire pressure drops a programmed amount.

One possible way to reduce false lights is to inflate your tires to 32 psi then calibrate the system to that pressure. AFter calibrating the monitoring system.. inflate the tires up to 36psi, or whatever the door data plate says. Of course, I haven't had a problem so I haven't tried it.

My CA when purchasing the car told me Nitrogen in the tires helps with this. Anyone agree/disagree?

My 128i came stock with 78% nitrogen in the tires - and they still tend to lose about 2 lbs. per month, exclusive of temperature changes.

From what I've read, the benefits of Nitrogen over ordinary air are minimal - but if it's offered for free as in Costco, then why not? They typically install green colored caps if they use Nitrogen in the tires. My TPMS warning light came on two weeks ago and checking all tires showed that they were all 32psi - likely due to the drop in outside temperature. BTW, will the TPMS warning indicate which tire is the problem?

Don't all new cars have TPMS sensors now? So even if you ditch your current one, I don't see how it'd help you escape the warning lights when your pressure is low from temperature changes

Like others have said, could be a faulty sensor, no harm making a trip to the dealer and stealing some coffee.

I believe when they drop 4 psi below the calibration point, the warning comes up. I get mine checked/filled at Costco with nitrogen and so far, I have not had any warning lights. Of course my car is stored in a garage and the temps her are warmer than the northern states some of our members live in. Also, you have to remember to recalibrate the TPS after you add any air.

here's an idea if your tire pressure drops too fast

Sure enough.. After posting I went out to drive the car and my tire pressure light was on. The tires were all around 29-30psi, which I assume was due to the colder weather. I inflated them to 32psi and tried to calibrate but it only displayed the "resetting" message but did not reset after several minutes.

I was in a hurry to go to lunch so I inflated them to 36psi and tried to reset it again. I got the same "resetting" message until I finally moved the car 10 feet or so. I'll have to try resetting it at 32psi again the next time.

So if the light comes on when the pressure is 4 psi below calibration the light won't come on until they're down to 32-4 = 28psi. It would reduce nuisance warnings but I'm not sure it's really smart to let them get that low.

Here's an idea if your tire pressure drops too fast:
Use a socket and tighten the nut on the body of the valve stems. Don't overtorque them or you'll break something. One of mine did feel less tight than the other three. It was loose enough that I could tighten it using only my fingers on the deep well socket.

Regular air is already mostly nitrogen. Pure nitrogen, or especially a mix of air and nitrogen, in your tires does absolutely nothing.

Hahaha, I think I believe you man. I already had my winters on order at the time thankfully, but right after I ordered I found a rear with at least 3 nails in it.....right after a trip to Home Depot. Sucked 'cause my order got delayed as the shop ordered the wrong rear tires so replacements were delayed, leaving me to drive my beater '94 Accord wagon around for a week and a half total.

Alright come on guys, Natural Air (the stuff we breathe) is 78% N2, 21% O2, and 1% other gasses. So naturally if you use a regular air compressor your tires are going to be filled with 78% N2.

You mean I shouldn't have paid extra for my certified 78% nitrogen air compressor?
