Maintenance extension and Aftermarket GE Warranty?

Dealer is offering BMW extension on all maintenance and a GE 5 star warranty.

The warranty goes to 8yrs, and 120,000 miles. I have been told that it won't ask about mods, and won't pay attention to them, and that BMW dealers do all of the service for it with BMW new parts.

Aftermarket Warranty is $3500 or so with a $50 deductible and its transferable.

Major hit or Major skip?

I would pay $3500 in a heartbeat to be able to put giant turbos in my 135i if that is actually true.

yeah i wish i could get something like that in writing. what they said was...

bmw dealers do the work and charge the warranty company - there isn't any room for questioning about mods and that they take a dont ask don't tell approach.

only problem is that this will never be written in writing, so if they change policy down the line, now that there is a bmw engine worth modding, you could get screwed i guess

Honestly, I would bet that this verbal assurance is worth exactly as much as the paper it is written on. If it's not in writing or reliably witnessed it can't be enforced. Take a lawyer and a voice recorder in and ask them to repeat it, clearly and directly into the microphone.

What they are telling you may or may not be true, but there are certainly no guarantees, and that is what you're paying for.

I'd be careful of aftermarket warranty. It's not going to cover what BMW does. I'm not saying this particular warranty won't do the same, but in my experiences most people who have aftermarket warranty get a shaving off of the parts and labor... not free of charge.

Another thing, extended warranties will not cover anything until the manufacturer's warranty expires. They do not overlap.

They're also good for not covering random things on a whim. Read the fine print.

GE Warranty

I actually had a GE extended warranty for my first bimmer, which I bought used. It was actually really good. It more than paid for itself when my DME got soaked in a car wash and the factory alarm went on the fritz. It did not cover brakes or any wear items though.
