Squeaky Brakes
I am starting to hear my brakes squeaky everytime I come to a stop.
It wouldn't bother me so much if I had a coupe or if it already was winter weather. However, it is plain sunny and this noise is interfering with my music pleasure. Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this. And please don't have me remove the brakes completely. Its not fun forgetting to put them back. Thanks,

My only suggestion would be to remove the offending pads (front, rear or all), apply anti-squeal compound to the back and then put them back on. I don't have any myself, but my friends do, so I imagine that it can be purchased at an auto parts store.

Would this be something that the dealer does under maintenance?

Exact same problem here - have an appointment tomorrow with the dealership to get it fixed... as far as I'm concerned with a brand new car and 8k km it itsn't my responsibility to fix this problem.

Oh, earlier than me. Could you let us know the outcome. And BTW, which BMW dealer are you attending?

My car has been in twice for this and the squeal continues. The first time they "serviced the brakes" and the second time I don't think they did a damn thing. They did give me a service memo explaining the compromise in pad material resulting in brake dust and squeal but higher performance.
With the top down it is very loud although it seems a bit better now that the weather is cooler. My dealer says it should be worse in cooler temps not better, but what the hell do they know.

I'm going to BMW of Toronto - my first time taking the car in... only recently have my brakes gone from background noise to quite damn noticeable. I'll let you guys know how things work out (or not).

Nothing - thats exactly what you can expect if you take your car in for squeeky brakes... the mechanic took me out for a drive... brakes were squeeking - "this is what you get for the best brakes on the market" is what he says... I respond with "i really don't think there's anything great about these brakes except for the rediculous amount of brake dust and noise". I got a car wash for my troubles... the mechanic said to go out and do some hard braking from time to time... good luck guys.

What the mechanic said is not unreasonable advice; my brakes began to squeak a few months back, after 3 or 4 very aggressive stops they've been squeak free. It's worth a try.

Yes, it is called bedding the brake pads in. It needs to be done from time to time with Brembo pads.

I was told to make several 60-10 MPH decelerations without stopping and as quickly as possible without locking the wheels up. This should bed the pads in again.

Here in Southern Oregon, many squirrels, chipmunks and deer have imprudently chosen to pitch their dwellings near Dead Indian Road; those little guys are in considerable debt to the brake engineers at BMW. The posted limit on the stairway is 55, I choose to cruise a bit below said limit so as to protect the innocent creatures, secondarily, my hot rod. Ill-chosen decisions of many woodland critters maintain my brakes in a squeak-free mode. Ya' gotta' love em', keeps this old man on his toes, keeps them alive. Offered, a snap-shot of the Indian, while this typical, relatively pedestrian section of the drive appears innocuous, there are opportunities within the 18 miles of twisties. Mister, haven't we both driven the switchbacks which spill into North Glendora?

How many of you use tire shine? If that crap gets on your brakes, it's Squeal City.
It's just as frustrating on the tech's end, since there's nothing we can do about brake squeal. It's almost always an environmental issue, and that's not covered by warranty. |

Easy $0.50 solution...
...foam ear plugs. It cuts down on wind noise, too! (just kidding) If it really drives you nuts, they do sell anti-squeal spray at auto shops. |

Whatever BMW provides as OEMs. Just had the car for 3 months.

Brembo pads my friend. Learn to love the dust and squeal.
