Exclamation Help! Service Engine Soon light, 4th time now!

I keep getting the 'Service Engine Soon' light on the dash of my new 135i. Four times now, once a week since I've owned it to be exact. BMW service keeps telling me there is some kind of a minor pressure leak in the fuel tank, and they suspect the gas cap is not on properly since diagnostic tests show no specific problems. Note: I own another BMW (2007 X3) and have never had a problem with my gas cap replacement skills. They simply run the test on the 135i and turn the light off after all tests pass.

I should mention the first time it happened it was before I ever filled up the car, at about 100 miles. The last time I brought it in, I even demonstrated how to replace the gas cap to my SA--and he confirmed I know what I'm doing. He just gave me a new gas cap; we determined (after 3 service visits!) the old one felt loose (turned to the left too easily). The new one still feels a bit loose but tighter than the first one. BUT...after a couple hundred miles it happened again today! FOUR times for the same problem in the first 1100 miles is ridiculous.

Can anybody help? I'm at the end of my rope. This is my wife's car...she's furious with me. Should I invoke the lemon law? The car is fine otherwise (save a minor intermittent oddity with the nav/entertainment buttons losing memory function). There is no engine performance issue...

"take it back when it's on"

It's on, it stays on. I do. I've done that three times now.

Taking it back didn't help the previous three times I brought it in. What is my guarantee this time it will be fixed for good?

Perhaps an upgrade to the new software would help? I would take it back and tell them - if it is a pressure leak - you want it fixed. If you don't get cooperation, contact BMW NA.

Are you getting a CEL "check engine light" or just limp mode "engine malfunction reduce power" or both?

If your getting a CEL put an OBD2 tool in and give me the code. I'll let you know what the issue is....(you can buy an OBD2 tool at any auto parts store for less than $50. Its very useful.)

If not, don't put up with this. Simply explain I have been back now 4 times in 1100 miles. For the same issue! I will contact a lemon law attorney if you don't resolve my issue.

Thank you for your response anthony. I'm getting a yellow light that says, specifically, "Service Engine Soon". There is no power loss or problem with the operation of the vehicle at all. BMW says it has to do with the fuel tank. I will try to find out the code, if any.

take it back and don't accept the car until it's fixed....I'd take it back everyday until it's done correctly.

I told them last time (the third time) that I need it to be actually fixed, hold on to the car longer if necessary. But they called the next day saying couldn't find anything wrong with the car. They simply turned off the light and gave me a new gas cap, telling me that the gas cap was loose. But even that did not fix it.

Here is what the last service order said:

A CUSTOMER STATES SERVICE ENGINE SOON LIGHT IS ON.
CAUSE: 0000005-4FRU LOOSE GAS CAP

FWIW, I had the "Service Engine Soon" light come on the first day of a vacation trip in my Z4 and couldn't get to my dealer for 2,000 miles with the light on for the entire trip. It turned out to be a defective gas cap. As the car ran fine with power and fuel economy normal, no overheating, etc., I wouldn't worry about how long it takes your dealer to fit a good gas cap - just keep after them until they fix it properly.

IT HAPPENED YET AGAIN!

Brought it in a 4th time; this time they found this:
CAUSE: 1600102 6FRU--1613515 7FRU--SYSTEM TEST FINDS LEAKING DMTL MODULE
EN001 Y 4465 W 1 16-13-7-193-479 LEAK DIAGNOSTIC PUMP: 162020
FC: 1613051400
1491 BMW SERVICE TEST FOUND FAULT 2A16 SUPER FINE EVAP LEAK PERFORMED TEST PLAN SYSTEM FAILED LEAK TEST CHECKED SYSTEM FOUND DMTL PUMP INOPERATIVE REPLACED DMTL PUMP PERFORMED SYSTEM TEST EVAP SYSTEM PASSED THE LEAK DETECTION TEST ROAD TESTED TO VERIFY REPAIRS

The replaced the DMTL pump, and I asked them to drive it 100 miles, and no problems so I picked it up.

Today, the SES light came on again! For the 5th TIME!

My wife and I are now close to taking legal action for the lemon law.

Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Service Engine Soon light - 4 service visits

At the last service, BMW experts were involved. They had the car for 3 weeks. They claimed to have spent $6500 in replacements. Today the light came on again. It seems to happen when I'm stuck at a long signal.
Otherwise the car runs great! If I invoke the lemon law, I would just order a clone. I guess I would also have to repeat the two month wait.
I hope the BMW engineers find a magic bullet to fix this thing - otherwise, I'm being deprived of the use of a fun car (that gets 31 mpg) because of some half-ass California smog laws.

Order a clone, and drive the one you have with the light on for two months. When the new one comes in, give the old one back. That's what I'd do.

I assume you are one in the same?

Yes I would be listening to Anthony. There is no harm in getting all your options on the table. I would get another car! If they had replaced so much stuff already, sounds like this is a true lemon. At least with a new car, you get a 09, and you can watch DVD's!!! Kidding aside I would not be very happy putting up with what you have...

I would get answers about the lemon law stuff before it's too late.

EspressoBoy

PS
What happened to your first account? If you forgot your pw or something I am sure a Mod can fix it.

i know this is kind of a long shot but could the metal fitting that the gas cap goes into be defective (those metal parts could have easily been bent when being made or the stamping machine pressure was wrong) ... or i believe there is some kind of vent on the gas tank that could also be defective

Thanks for your suggestion Blackjack - it solves one problem. I have another problem with the Lemon Law - it's just seems wrong to dispatch such a cool little machine to Lemon Law Limbo for something as silly as this gas cap thing.
In the near term, I'm in contact with the salesman about Lemon Law options.
There actually is a positive aspect to a leaky gas cap - fumes could find their way into the window of an Escalade or a Hummer.

IMO you should be in contact with the States Attorney or your lawyer regarding lemon laws. The salesman may not give you correct (legal) advice since he obviously is on the other side of this issue.

It's like asking the finance guy if you really need the extended warranty LOL.
