Jet Black...what have I gotten myself into?

This paint is insane! You literally just barely touch it and the paint scratches! I didn't believe what I heard about Jet Black before, but trust me, it's WAY worse than what you think.

Yep My next car is AW as my JB isn't holding as well as I thought. Looks excellent when washed though.. you can barely see the scratches

I'm extremely happy with my BSM, looks great...but you definitely have to be diligent between washings, etc.

This is one of the reasons we ordered AW on our 1er. We have a Jet Black 7 and it is beautiful when it is clean however, it is a pain to keep looking perfect...

JB is terrific when it's clean...and I mean CLEAN. My E46 was JB, IMO looked far better then a relative's BSM E90. When it's well polished, it appears infinitely deep, with a perfect mirror reflection.

Don't get too frustrated yet, the swirls are hidden as easily as they are created. Get a good polish to hide scratches and swirls, Zaino Z-PC, with a few coats of Z-2 w/ ZFX it'll look great for a whole 24, MAYBE 48 hours.

Like pit1 says... don't give up ! Zaino z5/z2 is very effective on JB cars... I was sceptic at first but it really does the job: Remove/hide swirls the easy way & offers durable protection...

A little barely-abrasive polish with a buffer now and then makes everything better.

Zaino is the answer - after 5 months still no swirls or scratches to be seen. If you don'r seal/protect the paint you will be sorry. It merely requires a Sunday to do the first treatment (most of that is waiting between applications), the once every other month for a Sunday morning touch up.

Here is Jet Black after a Zaino Sunday.

Jet Black was also a total nightmare for me. All of my previous products I used for my cars did not work on Jet Black. It was a whole new learning experience for me. I tried different products that actually cause swirl marks in my paint.

I finally ordered Menzerna Final Polish II which remove the swirl marks and then I applied Menzerna FMJ, which is a polymer paint protectant. I used foam applicators for both the polish and the FMJ. Make sure you buy quality applicators, some are made for polish others for poly paint protectors.

I even bought a portable florescent light (13 watts) so I could better see the swirls that I needed to remove. Wal-mart sells one that is about 12 inches long with a 15 foot cord.

I've use Zaino in the past and it is a great product. My only complaint about Zaino is the complicated directions you have to follow everytime you use it. I don't want to mix anything before I use it which you do with Zaino. Call me lazy, but that's OK.

Washed my car on Saturday and then parked her in the garage. Drove it to the gym late last night and parked in an end spot like I always do to avoid door dings. When I came out I realized I parked next to those stupid parking lot shrub spinklers. The whole car was covered in water spots! The neighbors must think I'm crazy, but I was in the driveway at almost midnight washing the car again. After a little Zaino gloss enhancer jet black is beautiful for the next day or two.

I struggled over paint color but having lived with JB for several months I have to say that was easily the right choice. I protect it with wax but I'm not overly concerned if it swirls. Swirled JB looks better than perfect anything else.

I wash mine typically on the weekends and use the California Duster every morning before pulling her out of the garage.

If you don't like to wash your car don't get Jet Black. It looks great but shows everything. I could drive myself insane trying to keep mine clean.

no issues with my 8 year old JB E46. you just have to invest some time every 2-3 months with a trusty Porter Cable, swirl remover/polish, and sealant.

no, it's not perfect, but the PC gets swirls and scratches out with no problem. i actually have more of a problem with rock chips.

but yes, if you can't even stand the slightest imperfection then go get something else. but even my freshly detailed BSM 135i pales in comparison when i park it next to my gleaming JB 330ci with 8 years' worth of wear and tear

Hi All,

My first post, new to this forum and excited to take delivery of my 09 JetBlack 135 in a week or two. Question for JB owners, which I hope has relevance to this thread:

My local BMW dealership post-sale is offering for ~$500 to put some PolySteel or something like that (paper is at home) exterior and interior sealant on my new 135 before I take delivery. Is that worth it with JetBlack cars with what JB owners here are discussing with swirls, etc.? It that sealant help fight against swirls or no and I should save my money?

Thank you for your help. Sorry for the noob question, but I was just wondering what the conscious was and whether that $500 was well-spent or not.

Personally, if you don't mind a little work at home - I would order the Zaino Ultimate kit and a Z-CS Clear Seal for $150 and pocket the difference.

http://www.zainostore.com

Zaino Ultimate Protection Show Car Kit
Code:ZKIT-2
Price: $116.95
Quantity in Basket: none

Z-CS Clear Seal
Code:Z-CS
Price: $29.95

Jet black looks great, but it takes a bunch of work to keep it that way. I had JB on my last BMW, and i had to detail it every 3 months or the swirl marks and scratches would start.

But, boy does it look stunning when the upkeep on it is correct.

welcome to the wonderful world of the black bmw, you will absolutely adore your car and be the envy of almost all the other drivers on the road, for about 3 hours a week after you wash it, 1 hour if you live in a smoggy place like LA

I have JB and love it. I am careful to always use my foamaster to spray the car first, use the two bucket method and I always use two nice clean microfibre wash mitts. I have 5 microfibre drying towels to do the drying and my paint looks good. It looks great clean and even with some minor dust or dirt the paint looks good. I also use some quick detailer between washing's with a good towel and I find the car looks awesome. I admit JB takes more work and requires more care. However, I really like look and love my colour choice.
