Low oil after only 1800 miles.

On the way home from bringing my boy to football practice the oil light came on. I check the onboard computer in the driveway and it's below the min mark. It says +1 quart. The manual says not to drive the car more than 125 miles or engine damage may occur. Good thing I already made an appointment with the service department for a rattling noise. It goes in on Friday.

My thoughts on this are....

curious, did you do a hard/load break in?

or did you really baby the car?

I'm at 1100 miles and mine still shows full, I did a hard/load break in, but did not ever go over 5500 rpm (still have not)

I went to redline a couple times right after I got the car but I haven't been above 4500 rpm since. Top speed has been no more than 85 mph. :iono:

I can say for sure that some engines will not properly seat the rings unless they have a load put on them at break in, with motorcycles you simply go into a high gear and go WOT with it a few times to put high loads on the rings to seat them, or you'll end up with lots of oil burning

not sure if this is the same with cars, I've never gone into a really new engine to see how they were seating, or a turbo that already has much higher cylinder pressures

And sensors can be inaccurate (sure wish this engine had a dipstick). Mine was registering Full with only 6 qts. after I changed the oil at 1500 miles. Added the 7th qt. and still registered Full. :iono:

I'll have them check it out and I'll let y'all know what happens. Hopefully it's just innacurate sensor. The car was parked at an angle on a hill at the field so maybe that had something to do with it. The wife drives the car during the day so I'll see if the light came on again today.

Very likely (90%), the oil sensor gone bad. If this is the case, you don't have to worry anything. Just take it back to the dealer for a replacement.

The wife just got home and the car reads fine now, it must have been because it was parked on the hill. Damn that had me freaked out. I feel better now.

I hear 6.9 quarts are needed when doing an oil and filter change.

I always use 7. That last 0.1 qt isn't going to make a difference.

I had the same thing happen in my '06 323i, I thought something was wrong, but the car was pretty insistant that I chuck a litre in NOW. I did so, and never had another issue with it.
